Winter is Coming Checklist

11/23/2023 (Permalink)

As the crisp winter air settles in and snowflakes begin to fall, it's essential to ensure that your home is ready to withstand the challenges of the season. A winter-ready home not only keeps you warm and cozy but also protects your property from potential hazards brought by snow, ice, wind and extreme cold.

From insulating your windows and doors to preparing your heating system, this checklist will guide you through essential tasks that will safeguard your home against the winter chill. By taking proactive measures, you can enjoy the beauty of winter from the comfort of your warm and secure home.

Inspect Your Roof

Getting your roof inspected before the winter season is crucial for several reasons. First, winter brings harsh weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and ice accumulation. A roof that might have minor issues during other seasons can quickly turn into a major problem when subjected to the weight of snow and the expansion and contraction caused by freezing and thawing.

Inspections can identify any existing damage, such as cracked shingles or any signs of leakage. Timely repairs or replacements can prevent leaks and water damage inside your home, preserving its structural integrity.

So, a well-maintained roof ensures optimal insulation, keeping your home warm and energy-efficient during the colder months. By investing in a pre-winter roof inspection, you not only will protect your home, but also will potentially save on costly repairs that might be needed if problems are left unattended until after the winter season.

Fill in The Gaps

Filling gaps in your windows and doors before the winter season, and especially before a winter storm, is vital. These gaps, no matter how small they may seem, can allow cold drafts to seep into your home and cause the heat to escape. This leads to increased energy bills and reduced overall comfort.

By sealing these openings with weatherstripping materials or caulking, you create a barrier against chilly winds, keeping your home warm and cozy. Also, this simple yet effective measure helps in maintaining a consistent indoor temperature and keeps moisture from getting into your home.

If it snows and you have found gaps, the snow, ice, and water can enter into your home, causing enough damage for you to need water damage restoration services. If you don't act on it in a quick manner, this water damage can cause further issues like mold growth, structural problems, and more.

Test the Sump Pump

Testing your sump pump before the winter weather is essential when protecting your home and property from potential flooding and water damage. Winter often brings heavy rains and melting snow, increasing the risk of a basement flood.

A functional sump pump plays a crucial role in preventing water accumulation in your basement by pumping out excess water to the outdoors. Regular testing ensures that the pump is operational and ready to handle the increased water flow during the winter months.

If a problem is detected, you have ample time to repair or replace the pump before winter storms strike. Neglecting this simple maintenance task could lead to a basement flood, causing extensive damage to your property, valuable belongings, and even compromise the structural integrity of your home.

Clean Your Gutters

Cleaning your gutters before the winter weather is a crucial task that can save you from a host of potential problems. During the fall, leaves, twigs, and debris tend to accumulate in gutters, creating blockages. As winter arrives, these clogged gutters can prevent proper drainage, leading to water overflow.

In freezing temperatures, this trapped water can turn into ice dams, causing significant damage to your roof, siding, and foundation. By clearing out your gutters before winter, you ensure that the melting snow and ice have a clear pathway to flow away from your home.

Turn Off Outside Faucets

Turning off outside faucets before the winter season is essential to prevent water pipes from freezing and potentially bursting in the cold temperature. When water is left in the pipes, and faucets and pipes are exposed to the cold, it can expand and freeze, leading to cracks and leaks.

By shutting off the outside faucets and draining any remaining standing water off from the pipes, you eliminate the risk of water freezing inside and causing costly damage. It's also advisable to disconnect and store garden hoses, as they can trap water in the faucets even after you've turn them off.

Get Your Winter Supplies Ready

Preparing your home for the winter involves gathering essential supplies to ensure you and your family stay safe, warm, and comfortable. Here's a list of supplies you might need:

  • Heating Supplies: Ensure your heating system is in good working condition. Stock up on firewood, if applicable, and have your furnace serviced. Consider using space heaters as a backup but do not leave them unattended.
  • Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit that includes flashlights, batteries, candles, a first aid kit, blankets, and non-perishable food items in case of power outages during a winter storm.
  • Winter Tools: Have snow shovels, ice melt, and snow blowers on hand to clear driveways and pathways.
  • Home Repair Supplies: Keep basic tools, duct tape, and sealant handy for minor repairs that might become necessary due to a winter storm. This will hold you over, and depending on the size of the storm damage, reaching out to SERVPRO for storm damage restoration services is key.

Damages Hurricane Season Can Bring to Your Home

10/10/2023 (Permalink)

Weather is unpredictable and hurricane season, an annual meteorological event that strikes fear and concern into the hearts of residents in vulnerable regions, can wreak havoc on homes and communities. These powerful natural disasters, characterized by harsh winds, torrential rains, and storm surges, have the potential to cause extensive damage to residential structures.

From torn roofs and shattered windows to flooding and structural instability, the aftermath of hurricanes can leave homeowners facing not only physical devastation but also emotional and financial turmoil. We're here to let you in on the various ways hurricane season can bring damage to your home, as well as our restoration and emergency services that help mitigate these damages.

Hurricane Season Damages

Hurricane season can cause a wide range of damages to a home, including:

Roof Damage

High winds and flying debris can tear off shingles, damage roofing materials, or even lift entire sections of the roof, leading to leaks and water infiltration. If your roof is damaged during a hurricane, you should reach out to a professional ASAP. The longer the roof is damaged, the more damage will come of it. For example, you'll be dealing with not only the fear of your roof collapsing, but the water damage that will eventually turn into mold damage.

Window and Door Damages

Flying debris and strong winds can break windows and doors, compromising the structural integrity of the home and allowing wind and water to enter. This is not only dangerous for those that live inside the home, but to the home itself. The water that will enter into your home will cause damage to your floors, walls, and belongings, and eventually will turn into mold if not dealt with immediately.

The best way to avoid this is if you hear that a bad hurricane is coming your way, board up your windows and use sandbags around the exterior of your home.

Flood Waters

Heavy rainfall and surges of flood water can lead to severe flooding, damaging the interior of the home and its foundation. This can result in waterlogged walls, floors, and electrical systems.

Plus, water damage can come in 3 different types - clean water, gray water, and black water. Clean water damage is provoked by a broken appliance, faulty sprinklers, burst pipe, rainwater, etc. Although this type of water damage isn't dangerous, per say, if it's still not treated correctly, mold could develop from excess water - causing it to become a danger.

Gray water damage is considered unsanitary due to the source or the amount of time it has been stagnant. This water damage is usually caused by a broken toilet, washing machine, or anything that could leak hazardous chemicals.

Finally, black water damage is the most hazardous water to deal with. This comes from a natural disaster or a sewage problem. This water is considered to be very contaminated, so do not touch or go near it until you've had a professional come out and mitigate the water. It's not worth the risk to clean it on your own. If your home was affected, it's important to seek professional help right away to protect and avoid additional property damage so you can start living normally again.

It's important to note that gray and black water is not signified by color. It is typically a rating system to decipher and determine the severity of the damage. For example, a lake is not black in color, but would be considered black water due to unknown bacteria and hazardous materials living within it.

Structural Damage

Hurricane-force winds can weaken the structure of a home, causing walls to collapse or supporting beams to fail. This type of damage is especially heart-breaking and should be dealt with right away. This is a case for an emergency, so it's best to get out of your home if you notice any type of structural damages.

Mold and Mildew

The moisture left behind by hurricanes can create ideal conditions for mold growth, which can be harmful to both the home and those living inside. If you were not able to get a professional restoration company into your home to restore any water damage in a quick time frame, there's a huge chance that mold has already started to grow. When you contact a restoration company like SERVPRO, tell them that not only is there water damage, but suspicion of mold is present as well.

Plumbing Damage

Flooding can also damage plumbing systems, causing leaks, pipe breaks, or contamination of the water supply.

Foundation Damage

Storm surges and floodwaters can erode the soil around a home's foundation, leading to structural issues and potential sinking or shifting.

Landscape and Exterior Damage

A hurricane can uproot trees, damage fences, and destroy outdoor structures like sheds or garages.

Appliance and HVAC Damage

Water damage or power surges during a hurricane can harm appliances, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Personal Belongings

Homes can suffer damage to personal belongings, including furniture, electronics, and sentimental items, due to flooding and structural issues.

Fire Damage

When you think of a hurricane or any other type of disaster, you think of heavy rain, flooding, and other damages to your property. However, fire is another worry that should be on the top of your list. If a tree falls into your electrical equipment, a fire can break out and spread throughout your house. Fire damage is no joke, and we have the right professionals at SERVPRO Team Harvey to help.

If you start noticing water coming into your home, turn off and unplug anything that is electrical in your home to avoid a fire from starting, as water hitting electricity can cause a horrendous fire and more. In other words, stay aware!

How to Prevent Storm Damage

8/14/2023 (Permalink)

Storm damage is always hard to predict. You never know if the winds are going to pick up around your home, if the rain is going to flood the sewers, or if a tree is going to get struck, creating a fire. Because it's hard to predict, it's also hard to prevent. However, there are some ways you can try to get ahead of storm damage. Follow along with this blog to learn more about what can happen to your home during a storm and how you can try to prevent it.

Secure Outdoor Furniture

In the summer months, most people have outdoor furniture on their patios or decks. If you see that a big storm is headed your way, it would be a good idea to secure your furniture to prevent any damage. Even the sturdiest looking outdoor furniture can be flung into the sky within moments.

This does not only result in you wasting your money, but it can also pose a serious threat to yourself, your neighbors, and your home. To secure it, use steel security cables to fasten them to the ground. Though this process may seem time-consuming initially, it'll be worth it in the long run when your expensive furniture doesn't get blown away.

If you have a shed or a garage, storing them in there until the storm passes is an even easier and better way to secure things so you're not dealing with damage and broken belongings.

Check Your Trees

Aside from the occasional trim, full-grown trees are often left alone. However, keeping a close eye on your trees and giving them constant care plays a role in storm damage prevention. If strong winds are present, it can cause tree limbs to fall off, putting you, your neighbors, and your home at risk. Weak trees that lack a strong and secure foundation are also likely to get uprooted. Hence, be sure to give those trees some proper care or have a professional come out to get them out before a storm hits.

Get Your Roof Inspected

Getting your roof inspected on an annual basis should be part of your life when you own or rent a home. If you fail to get it checked, chances are, a storm can cause broken or old shingles to fly off, further damaging the roof. You may also be at risk of a roof leak without knowing. You'll know if you have one when a storm hits and you start finding water damage in your home. Get your roof checked once a year, as it is better safe than sorry.

Clean Your Gutters

Ensuring that your gutters are clear from debris is also a big one when it comes to storm damage prevention. If your gutters are full of debris like leaves, dirt, bird nests, etc., this blocks the water from being able to flow, causing flooding and structural damage. The last thing you need to deal with is a mold problem or basement flooding after a bad storm.

Check Your Doors and Windows

It's important to inspect your doors and windows to ensure proper sealing. If there is a little gap in the seal, water can easily flow in, causing flooding, mold, and a big cleanup. If the news calls for a dangerous hurricane, it's a good idea to board up the windows with wood to help prevent the wind from breaking the glass and water from getting in.

Create a Storm Safety Plan

Having a storm safety plan for you and your family is a great start to storm damage prevention. This plan should include a checklist of the things around your home that you need to check ahead of a storm. For example, look for loose siding, loose fence posts, and everything else we listed above. This will help you be prepared in the case that a storm does hit, helping you prevent basement flooding, roof issues, and any other further damage.

How to Handle Winter Storm Aftermath at Your Hoboken Home

1/12/2023 (Permalink)

Winter weather can pose a distinct challenge to the owners of various types of properties. Snow, ice, and sleet can cause damage to your siding, roof, walkways, driveways, and more. If your area deals with frequent freezing temperatures that thaw in cycles, your property is at risk of leaks, frozen pipes, and other issues. So, what are the best ways to handle winter storm aftermath at your Hoboken home? Let’s take a look.

Types of Winter Storm Damage
First, let’s take a look at the types of winter storm damage. These include flooding, fires, roof leaks, and structural damage. Flooding occurs when water freezes in your pipes, causing them to burst. If this happens, it is important to contact someone immediately for help as this could then lead to mold and other damage.

Fires can be caused by a number of reasons such as improperly cleaned chimneys, unattended fireplaces, downed power lines, or even overloaded electrical outlets. Regardless of the reason, winter storms are known to cause various types of fires.

As for roof leaks, ice dams can block pipes and snow can melt and freeze onto your roof breaking through shingles. High winds and hail can also cause damage to your roof which then exposes your property to moisture damage.

How to Handle the Aftermath
If your property falls victim to any type of winter storm damage, chances are your anxiety level will be through the roof. We understand that events like this can cause panic, but the best thing you can do is stay calm, take a few breaths, evaluate the situation, and make wise decisions to react appropriately. You’ll also want to make sure everyone inside is safe and evacuate everyone if necessary.

Turning off the water and power is a great idea, because as we mentioned above, winter storms may lead to floods, leaks, and roof damage. Turn off the water source to prevent further damage and turn your main power outlet off so you can prevent electrical fires.

You’ll also want to have a clear head so you can record your property losses. This is important to present to your insurance company when making claims.

Live in Hudson County? How to Protect Your Home from Winter Storm Damage

Live in Hudson County? How to Protect Your Home from Winter Storm Damage

Winter storms will be blistering through very soon and if you’ve lived in the Hudson County area for a few years now, you probably know what can hit you. Although SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City is not able to deter a storm away from your home, we can tell you how to protect your home from winter storm damage. Get comfortable, grab a blanket, and read on - this could get chilly.

Get Your Heating System Ready

Now is the time to get your furnace serviced, have your fuel oil tank checked, test your thermostats, and check for blocked ventilation. It’s important to ensure that your heating systems are ready for battle prior to the winter weather - especially when it comes to clogged ventilation. If your ventilation system isn’t properly working, this can cause bigger issues such as house fires

Get Your Fireplace and Chimney Inspected

Getting your fireplace and chimney inspected goes hand-and-hand with checking your heating systems. If you’re more inclined to use your fireplace for heat, make sure it’s free of debris and wildlife. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys, vents, and fireplaces be inspected at least once a year for your safety and the safety of your home. Have a professional come out and sweep out soot and other debris that could potentially catch fire.

Don’t Heat Your Attic

If possible, try not to heat your attic. This can cause snow and ice to melt into your roof and gutters, followed by re-freezing. If your roof has any cracks or holes, you’ll be looking at a moldy mess in your attic after everything settles (especially if you don’t go up there often). If you use the attic as a living space, make sure to get your roof checked before the winter season, seal any cracks or holes, and make sure your gutters are working properly.

Tree/Tree Branch Removal

If you have dead or dangerous trees close to your home, removing them before the winter hits is the safest decision. Wet, heavy snow can cause branches to fall easily, causing damage to your roof, windows, fencing, etc. If the trees around your home are not healthy, it’s a safer bet to have the full tree removed as opposed to gambling with the chance of it falling and crashing onto your property.

Open Kitchen Cabinets at Night

One trick that works well is opening your kitchen cabinets overnight. The winter brings extremely cold temperatures and one of the best ways to avoid your pipes from freezing is by inviting heat into the cabinets. The heat from inside your home will hug the pipes and help keep the water flowing through them at a reasonable temperature. Allowing your pipes to freeze can cause them to burst, eventually causing water damage

A Guide To Storm Damage Prevention

7/29/2022 (Permalink)

A Guide To Storm Damage Prevention

When strong storms accompanied by wind, rain, and hail hits your town, countless people are impacted. Both homeowners and business owners struggle to recuperate from the damage that has been caused due to the storms. Most of the time, this is because of a lack of preparedness. The weather is often unpredictable, and a storm may emerge out of nowhere, giving you very little time to get your affairs in order before destruction strikes. Being prepared is the first step to storm damage prevention so here are our top tips that you must follow.

Securing Outdoor Furniture

During strong storms, even the sturdiest looking outdoor furniture can be flung into the sky within moments. This does not only result in you wasting your money but can also pose a serious physical threat to yourself your neighbors. To secure your outdoor furniture well, use steel security cables to fasten them to the ground. Though this process may seem time-consuming initially, it will be worth it in the long run when your expensive patio furniture doesn’t get blown away.

Checking Your Trees

Your tall, bushy trees might be one of the most dangerous threats during a storm. Aside from the occasional trim, full-grown trees are often left alone. However, keeping a close eye on your trees and giving them constant care plays a role in storm damage prevention. During storms, strong winds are also present that can cause dead branches from your trees to fall off. This can cause serious hurt to your neighbors, your property, and yourself! Weak trees, that lack a strong and secure foundation are also more likely to get uprooted. Hence, be sure to give those trees some proper care before the storm season arrives.

Inspecting Your Roof

Having your roof inspected professionally on a regular basis is not just beneficial to prevent storm damage. It also helps to ensure the longevity of your roof. If you’re more hands-on and are experienced in doing handy work, then you can do your roof inspections on your own too! Look out for any missing shingles or any leaks, as these are issues that may get amplified during a storm, affecting the interior of your home.

Keeping Your Gutters Clean

Making sure your drainage systems are in order is important as gutters that are left neglected could have been accumulating debris and standing water. Debris can block any rainwater from being drained away, resulting in flooding during excessive rains due to storms. Standing water can also flow into the foundation of your home and cause flooding in the basement.

If you’re currently dealing with the aftermath of storm damage, SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City can be of great service to you. We understand the worries that you may have at this moment as we have been in the business for a long time. Aside from any physical damages, you may be worrying about insurance claims and other financial matters. We can aid in both these areas, with our storm damage cleanup restoration as well as help you to manage the insurance paperwork and process. If you ever find yourself stuck in a storm, our team has the capability to quickly respond to you due to our 24-hour emergency service.

What Are The Consequences Of Ignoring Your Roof After Storm Damage?

4/21/2022 (Permalink)

Your roof can sustain serious storm damage due to hail, and those that delay inspecting it and performing the needed repairs may suffer the following consequences, which will drive up their eventual repair costs.

Warm Air Will Escape

When shingles are no longer present on your roof because of a storm, then warm air will be able to escape through the ceiling. This means that the interior will feel drafty and you’ll need to use additional heat to keep yourself warm which in turn will increase your power bill.

Roof Leaks

Roof shingles contain granules which serve as a form of protection. If they disappear, the roof’s surface will be completely exposed to elements such as moisture, snow and rain. Water will begin leaking into the property, and you might not notice it immediately, but by the time you do, it can cause serious issues such as water damage to the walls and ceiling and electrical issues if it comes into contact with appliances.

Mold

This is an organism which thrives indoors and outdoors. While in nature it forms a key part of the local ecosystem, when it appears indoors mold will cause all sorts of problem. A roof that has been damaged due to a storm will begin leaking at some point, and when this water gets into places that are damp and dark this will foster mold growth.

Compromised Structural Integrity

If months or years pass without repairing the damage, and water continues to leak into the roof due to rain and melting snow, the development and growth of mold may begin to compromise the roof’s structural integrity. This is extremely dangerous because in serious cases it may lead to a roof collapse.

What Should You Do When Your Roof Has Sustained Damage?

Ignoring the problem is not recommended. The quicker you respond the fewer problems you’ll face and the costs will be lower. While no one wants to spend money repairing a damaged roof, the consequences of not doing so will be severe.

You’ll want to speak with a professional contractor as soon as possible and schedule an appointment where they can come take a look at your roof to determine the amount of damage it has sustained. Depending on the results of our assessment, you may need to speak with your insurance carrier to issue a claim and then use the funds to get the roof fixed.

These simple steps will get your roof repaired cost effectively while preventing additional damage. Remember that the longer you delay in getting the issue resolved, the greater the damage will be when you’re finally forced to.

Uncovering The Hidden Signs Of Storm Damage

10/15/2021 (Permalink)

Storm damage to your roof isn’t always easy to spot, and it is the things that you don’t see that are most dangerous, because problems which are allowed to linger will often turn into bigger and more expensive ones. Below are some signs of hidden roof damage and how to spot them.

Granule Loss

Roofing that is made with asphalt shingles will be covered in a special material called granules. This material resembles sand and is used to protect the surface from ultraviolet rays while lowering the buildup of heat which can cause deterioration. However, they are tough to spot from ground level and may be lost as the result of a storm which will leave the roof surface exposed to the elements.

Tiny Holes with Leaks

Even the smallest holes in a roof will allow water and moisture to seep in, and this is something that you must avoid at all costs, since it can lead to the development of mold in the interior and all the bad stuff that comes with it. Unfortunately, even those that get up on the roof and look closely at the surface might actually miss these openings, which is why you should hire a contractor with a trained eye and the right equipment.

Hail Damage

The majority of property owners assume that hail damage is simple to spot because it always appears as dents or holes, but this is not true. In actuality, hail damage can appear different depending on the roof type, the severity of the impact and storm direction. Often, the only way to tell if a roof has been damaged by hail is to hire a professional who can expect the surface up close and who knows what to look for. As with leakage and tiny holes, it takes trained and experienced eyes.

Gutter Dents

Gutters are essential as they capture rainwater which falls from the roof. If the gutters are missing or damaged, water might pool and then seep through roofing materials which will cause mold and rot. While gutter dents might not seem like a big deal, the damage will prevent water from diverting away from the property, so this is one of the first places you should inspect in the aftermath of a storm.

Lifted Shingles

Just because a storm hasn’t ripped the shingles off the roof doesn’t mean that damage hasn’t occurred. Sometimes the shingles are merely lifted up, but when they become loose the tight seal that they maintained with the roof will break. This scenario is just as bad as having small holes, because water and moisture will get through the opening and travel down into the interior.

Because roof repairs can be expensive, many homeowners put off doing it, in the hope that the problem will go away by itself. Of course, life doesn’t work this way and the problem will only worsen until things become so bad that the homeowner is forced to take action, and by that time the cost can be financially debilitating, which is why it is so important to contact a contractor as soon as you suspect damage.

If you are running a business within a zone that is prone to hurricanes, it is essential for you to put together an efficient hurricane recovery plan. This can help you to salvage as much of your assets as possible to mitigate cleaning and restoration costs. If you do not already have a plan on hand, here is what we have put together to help you manage the consequences of an emergency situation.

What is a Hurricane Recovery Plan?

A hurricane recovery plan consists of a set of business procedures that is documented with an aim to respond to a hurricane. Such a plan can be comprised of protocols to tackle a series of weather events from its beginning towards the end. The steps are as follows:

  • Preventative steps to anticipate and alleviate the aftermath of a hurricane
  • Emergency response procedures to warrant safety in the event of an emergency
  • Immediate steps to bring back essential business operations
  • Long-term processes to establish full recovery

Why a Hurricane Recovery Plan is Important

Hurricanes are among the most destructive catastrophes within the United States. On top of the danger posed by the natural disaster to the human population, businesses also are put at a risk. It is estimated that the damage from hurricanes can accumulate to approximately $28 billion a year and nearly half of the economy in the United States is vulnerable to hurricane damage. However, it is not just the damage costs that businesses need to worry about. When hurricanes happen, major disruption of business operations can happen and some companies may never recover.

Forced Out of Business

As much as 40 to 60 percent of businesses nationwide never re-open after a natural disaster takes place. The key factor that determines the chances of a business’ survival is how quickly they can respond. If operations cannot be reinstated efficiently, the business could be closed down for good. It is also found that 90 percent of smaller businesses fail within a year if proper hurricane recovery failed to be implemented within 5 days of a natural disaster. This is why a hurricane recovery plan is highly crucial and needs to be put together at an early stage.

How Hurricanes Affect Businesses

The reason behind hurricanes getting the most coverage in the news is because they are shocking. The destruction that they cause is often massive and frightening. However, the associated physical damage is just one of the many ways that a hurricane can inflict to businesses. Below are some of the other types of damages posed by different disasters:

  • Wind damage
  • Flooding
  • Shortage of staff
  • Utility and electricity outages
  • Server / infrastructure damages
  • Transportation disruptions
  • Damaged hardware that causes data loss
  • Restricted building access

Each of these damages affects your business operations in different ways. However, the impact of the damage to individual operation may differ in terms of scale. Regardless of the extent of damage, there is bound to be a certain sum of damage costs that your business needs to cover. To mitigate the damage costs inflicted by a hurricane, assemble a proper hurricane recovery plan early.

Looting and Broken Glass Prevention

Both during and after a storm, looting and broken glass can be a problem. To protect your house from issues, invest in shutters, hurricane windows, and the like. To secure your home, these features will also help prevent broken windows by looters who want to enter your abode. Your home will be more secure, the better your window improvements are.

Roof Damage

A lot of problems are caused from storms where roofing is concerned. You need to be prepared if you live in an area prone to damaging storms. To begin with, to find any repairs that are needed, have your roof inspected. Consider using materials for repair such as those with lengthy warranties, GAF materials, etc. These are designed to resist wind damage.

Flooring

Certain types of flooring withstand water damage better than others. If minimal flooding occurs, repair costs can be lessened, and damage minimized, by choosing the right type of flooring.

In the case of minimal flooding, flooring materials should be inspected and, if necessary, removed as soon as possible by qualified personnel. New flooring should then be put down after the area is cleaned, treated to avoid mold and mildew problems, restored, etc.

Storage Areas

The Different Facets Of Storm Damage

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

Where do you live? No matter the climate or what town you're in, from time to time, you're likely to experience a severe storm. However, not all damage resulting from storms is the same because, let's face it, not all storms are the same. To protect your home against storm damage, it's crucial that you understand various types of damage from severe weather and how they differ.

Before we go any further, however, let's clear up one thing: After a devastating storm or some other natural disaster, the best course of action – whether involving a residence or a commercial building – is to call in the experts. Only then can you be assured of proper equipment, chemicals, training, certification, and expert services. You need a water restoration service.

Now let's look at damage that could be suffered as a result of a storm.

Damage from Ice

Not surprisingly, the chances of car accidents and people falling down increase due to snow and ice. However, power lines and trees can also be taken down because of ice damage and the weight involved. Due to heavy ice storms, entire cities have lost power for days on end! Then, underground flooding is frequently caused once the ice melts. That can mean trouble.

Wind Damage

Tornadoes, hurricanes, and even some standard rainstorms can cause wind damage. Strong winds can throw furniture and rocks into buildings, rip up gutters, blow shingles off of roofs, and break tree limbs. Bolt down or bring in outdoor furniture to protect against damage from the wind.

Floods

Though it seems significant enough to be in a category of its own, flooding is included under the category of "water damage". Oddly enough, in order to experience flooding in your home, you don't necessarily have to live through a hurricane.

The foundation of your home could be threatened by water table rises resulting from excessive rainfall. Basements are a typical entry for water during a flood. But water can enter the foundation if you don't have a basement. Test your sump pump regularly to protect against flooding (if you have one). Regularly check your drainage system to ensure that it is in working order.

Damage From Water

One of the most common types of storm damage is water damage, particularly where hurricanes are concerned. Water can cause mold to grow, drywall to fall apart, and wood to rot if left unchecked. It decreases indoor air quality, and, to a building’s structure, can pose a significant threat.

Hail Damage

Hail is dangerous and annoying. To individuals outside at the time of a hailstorm, it can even cause significant injuries. Hail has a reputation for damaging roofs, denting cars, breaking windows, and more. Use hail resistant shingles to protect your roof. Park in a garage or under a hardcover to protect your car.

The Results And Aftermath

Naturally, visible damage after a storm is not surprising. This can include wet carpets, broken roof tiles, dented cars, fallen tree limbs, and more. Remember, however, that unseen damage is important to remember (and inspect for), too. When scheduling storm damage assessment by a professional, make sure that the following are investigated by the team you hire:

  • Hidden moisture damage
  • Mold growth
  • Structural integrity

4/16/2021 (Permalink)

Although hurricanes are necessary to sustain our ecosystem, they are life-threatening and destructive. Better understand more about the different types of hurricane damage and how you can better protect your home against hurricanes in future.

What Are Hurricanes?

The characteristics of a hurricane are storms that rotate rapidly with strong winds, a spiral arrangement thunderstorm with heavy rain, closed low-level atmospheric circulation with a low-pressure center. They are part of Mother Nature’s way to sustain our ecosystem but can prove to be highly destructive.

Hurricane damages can result in physical, economic, or emotional hardships. Some of the most destructive and well-known hurricanes are called Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Harvey. Both hurricanes caused property damage worth a total of $125 billion.

Types of Damage Caused by Hurricanes

  • While windy days are highly welcomed, especially on hot summer days, strong hurricane winds have enough power to uproot trees and other types of debris. When picked up by the hurricane wind, it can send them hurling through the air at dangerously high-speed.
  • Storm surges are known as one of the deadliest damages by hurricanes. In an analysis of tropical cyclones which have occurred between 1963 to 2012. Storm surges are caused by strong wind which causes the sea levels to rise rapidly, pummeling and engulfing anything in its path.
  • Flooding is a result of the prolonged rainfall that often comes with hurricanes. The most significant floods were caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They hold a record of cause floods that go up to 50 inches high. This is extremely damaging to vehicles, vegetation, and lower-level buildings.
  • With the speed of hurricane winds, multiple small tornado paths may be created. Again, this causes trees or even homes to be uprooted, creating even more windborne debris.

Understanding the Storm Damage Restoration Process

7/10/2020 (Permalink)

Snowstorms, ice dams, hurricanes, and tornadoes can occur at any time and can cause an immense amount of damage to one’s property. Heavy rains have been known to cause powerful winds and flooding which then lead to downed trees and roof damage on properties.

During storms, the integrity of a building can be compromised and this can cause moisture from snow and rain to infiltrate into the protective surfaces of the roof. In turn, this can result in wood swelling and mold build-up.

Post-storm damage can create health and safety hazards and that is why storm damage restoration services are required to reinstate properties as soon as possible. When your home or business premise has been interrupted by water damage, you need professional help to get your property back to normal operations.

Here are some of the activities you can expect during the storm damage restoration process.

Safety First

Severe storms can leave behind damaged roofs, broken glass, and other hazards. The first priority is to ensure everyone’s safety following a storm. Ensure that you stay away from your property until you are certain that the power has been cut. This is to make sure there is no threat of electrocution if flooding occurred and drowned the power lines that were close by. Professionals then inspect your property and evacuate everyone if the roof of your property is not stable.

Secure The Property

After the storm damage restoration team is sure that everyone is safe, the next action they take is to remove any valuable possessions that are at risk of sustaining damage. Everything is done to help secure the property right away to stop further flooding or heavy leaks. Any standing water is immediately drained to prevent mold growth which can be harmful to the health of occupants.

Documenting Damage For Insurance

Once the experts confirm it is safe to move around your property, they begin to assess the damage. This is necessary when filing an insurance claim. Photos are taken both inside and outside of your property using high-resolution cameras for clarity. It is best to leave this part to professionals since they know the right places to look. After they have documented the level of the damage, the restoration company will discuss the renovation plans with you and your insurance adjuster.

Renovation Work Begins

When everything is agreed upon between you and your insurance company, the restoration company is now ready to begin renovations. First, the restoration company rescues your building from greater structural issues by inspecting and replacing dilapidated areas. The extent of damage in your property will determine the type of equipment that will be used. Specialized vacuums and pumps are used to remove water from the affected areas in cases of flooding.

The roof is renovated and sealed while the ceiling gets restored to its former condition. Professionals use dehumidifiers and air movers to prevent mold and mildew growth. A reputable storm damage restoration company ensures that they shampoo salvageable carpets and disinfect hard surfaces, as well as apply deodorants to combat any odors.

If you have recently suffered from storm damage, you can rely on specialists at SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City to reinstate your home or business premise.

Fay Is On The Way

7/10/2020 (Permalink)

Tropical Storm, Fay, is making its way up the East Coast. The storm is set to bring heavy rains prompting areas to flood. Make sure your property is set up for this type of weather by securing any loose items outside and moving items away from windows and doors. Be sure to account that all employees or family members are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance, identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.  If water enters the building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for first responders.  While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.  Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.  Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.  Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains). Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged. If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream, or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered to be black water and could be hazardous to your health. Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible.  Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.  Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.  Return only when authorities indicate it is safe. Stay safe everyone!
