Tips to Protect Your Home from Water Damage this Winter
12/19/2023 (Permalink)
As winter approaches, it's crucial to be prepared for potential water damage in your home, which can be caused by a variety of cold weather-related issues. Frozen pipes, ice dams, overflowing gutters, melting snow, leaky water heaters, and condensation are common culprits during the winter months. To protect your home, it's essential to take proactive measures.
In this blog, we will explore practical tips to protect your home from these winter water damage threats. By understanding the causes and implementing preventive strategies, you can minimize the risk of costly and inconvenient water damage, ensuring your home remains safe and secure throughout the winter season.
The Most Common Causes of Water Damage in the Winter
The six most common causes of water damage in the winter include frozen pipes, ice dams, overflowing gutters, melting snow, leaky water heaters, and condensation. To understand a bit more, let's jump into each of these to explain more.
Frozen Pipes
Frozen pipes pose a significant risk for water damage during the winter months. When temperatures drop, water inside can freeze, causing them to expand and potentially burst. As the ice blockage inside the pipe expands, it exerts immense pressure on the pipe walls, leading to cracks or ruptures.
When the ice thaws or when pressure builds up due to the blockage, it can result in a sudden release of water. This can cause extensive damage to walls, ceilings, and floors, leading to flooding, structural damage, and even mold growth if not promptly addressed.
How to Protect Against Frozen Pipes?
Preventing frozen pipes during winter is crucial to avoid potential water damage and costly repairs. One effective method is insulating both exposed and vulnerable pipes with pipe sleeves or heat tape, especially in unheated or poorly insulated areas like basements, attics, and crawl spaces. All exterior openings where cold air might seep in, such as cracks and gaps, should be sealed to maintain a warmer environment around the pipes. During really cold weather, allow faucets to drip slightly; the continuous flow of water can prevent them from freezing. Keeping your home consistently heated, even when you're away, helps maintain a stable indoor temperature as well.
For pipes located in cabinets, open the doors to allow warm air circulation. It's also advisable to disconnect garden hoses and drain outdoor faucets before winter sets in. Taking these preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of frozen pipes and the potential water damage they can cause further issues like mold growth, structural problems, and more.
Ice Dams
Ice dams can cause significant water damage during winter by blocking the natural flow of melting snow from the roof. When warm air inside a home rises and melts the snow on the roof, the water trickles down until it reaches the colder eaves, where it refreezes and forms ice dams. As these dams grow, they prevent melted snow from properly draining off the roof.
Consequently, the trapped water can seep beneath shingles, damaging the roof, insulation, and ceilings. Eventually, this can lead to leaks, water stains, and even structural damage if left unaddressed.
How to Protect Against Ice Dams?
Preventing ice dams involves a combination of insulation, ventilation, and proactive maintenance. Adequate attic insulation helps maintain a consistent roof temperature, preventing snow from melting unevenly. Proper ventilation, such as ridge and soffit vents, allows cold air to circulate under the roof and expel excess heat, reducing the likelihood of ice dams.
Additionally, sealing air leaks in the attic, especially around chimneys, vent pipes, and light fixtures, can prevent warm air from escaping and melting snow on the roof. Prompt removal of snow from the roof using a roof rake after heavy snowfall can also minimize the chances of ice dam formation. By addressing these factors, homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of ice dams and the subsequent water damage to their homes.
Overflowing Gutters
Overflowing gutters can cause considerable water damage during winter months by preventing proper drainage of melting snow and rainwater. When gutters are clogged with debris or ice, water accumulates and spills over the edges, saturating the foundation, walls, and landscaping below. In freezing temperatures, this pooled water can freeze, leading to ice dams and additional blockages in the gutters. As a result, water can seep into the interior and exterior of the home, causing structural damage, mold growth, and deterioration of the foundation.
How to Protect Against Overflowing Gutters?
Preventing overflowing gutters involves regular maintenance and proactive measures. Cleaning gutters at least twice a year, ideally before winter and after fall, helps remove leaves, debris, and other blockages that can impede water flow. Installing gutter guards or screens can also minimize the accumulation of debris, reducing the frequency of cleanings. Ensuring that gutters are properly pitched towards downspouts aids in efficient drainage as well.
Regularly inspecting gutters for signs of damage, such as sagging or leaks, and repairing them promptly can prevent overflow. Additionally, extending downspouts away from the foundation and ensuring they discharge water onto sloped surfaces or drainage systems can further prevent damage caused by overflowing gutters.
Taking these proactive measures helps maintain proper water flow, protecting your home from potential water damage and associated problems.
Melting Snow
Melting snow can pose a significant threat of water damage during winter, especially when accumulated snow turns into water and seeps into vulnerable areas of a home. When snow accumulates on roofs, it can melt due to rising temperatures or heat escaping from the house. If proper insulation and ventilation are lacking, melted snow can penetrate through roof shingles, leading to leaks, water stains, and potential structure damage. Additionally, as snow melts, the water can saturate the ground around the foundation, increasing the risk of basement flooding.
How to Protect Against Melting Snow?
Preventing melting snow is not possible, as it is a natural occurrence during warmer winter days. However, homeowners can take preventive measures to minimize the damage caused by melting snow. Proper insulation and ventilation in the attic help maintain a consistent roof temperature, reducing the likelihood of snow melting unevenly and forming ice dams. Regularly clearing snow from the roof's edges using a roof rake can prevent excessive accumulation and minimize the risk of leaks.
Additionally, ensuring that downspouts are clear and directing melted snow away from the foundation can prevent basement flooding. While you can't stop snow from melting, these precautions can help manage the water flow and protect your home from potential water damage.
Leaky Water Heaters
Leaky water heaters can be a significant source of water damage during winter months. As the temperature drops, the metal in the water heater tank contracts, potentially causing cracks or gaps that result in leaks. Even a small, unnoticed leak can lead to significant damage over time, saturating floors and nearby walls. Prolonged exposure to moisture can weaken the structure, foster mold growth, and further damage belongings. Regular inspection of water heater for signs of corrosion, rust, or pooling water is crucial.
How to Protect Against Leaky Water Heaters?
Preventing leaky water heaters involves regular maintenance and vigilance. One of the key steps is checking the pressure relief valve periodically to ensure it is functioning correctly. Draining the tank at least once a year helps remove sediment buildup, which can contribute to corrosion. Insulating the water heater and its pipes can prevent condensation, reducing the risk of rust formation. Routinely inspecting the tank, connections, and pipes for any signs of moisture or corrosion is essential. If you notice even minor leaks, addressing them promptly can prevent larger issues.
Consider installing a drip pan under the water heater connected to a drain to contain potential leaks. Regular professional inspections can also catch problems early, preventing major damage and ensuring the longevity of your water heater.
Condensation
Condensation in winter occurs when warm indoor air meets cold surfaces, leading to formation of water droplets. This moisture can accumulate on windows, walls, and ceilings, potentially causing water damage. Over time, continuous condensation can seep into porous materials, promoting mold growth, rot, and structural deterioration. Inadequately insulated attics and poorly ventilated spaces are particularly susceptible.
How to Protect Against Condensation?
Preventing condensation involves managing indoor humidity levels and ensuring proper ventilation in your home. To reduce humidity, use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchen, and consider using a dehumidifier if necessary, especially in basements. Properly insulating your home can help maintain consistent temperatures and prevent warm, moist air from melting cold surfaces. Make sure to seal any gaps or cracks in walls, windows, and doors to prevent outdoor air infiltration.
Additionally, improving ventilation, such as using ventilation fans or opening windows periodically, can help remove humid air and allow fresh, dry air to circulate. Properly ventilated attics and crawl spaces also play a crucial role in minimizing condensation. By addressing these factors, you can effectively prevent condensation and the potential water damage it can cause within your home.

Types of Water Damage From Appliances
10/6/2023 (Permalink)
Water damage caused by household appliances can be both unexpected and immensely disruptive. From leaking washing machines and dishwashers to malfunctioning water heaters, these incidents can wreak havoc on your home, leading to structural damage, mold growth, and compromised possessions.
The silent and gradual nature of appliance-related water leaks often means that significant damage can occur before you even notice the problem. Understanding the common causes, signs, and preventive measures related to water damage from appliances is essential for every homeowner.
We're here to let you know about the various aspects of appliance-induced water damage and how we can help with water damage restoration.
Water Damage From the Refrigerator
Water damage from a refrigerator can occur due to various reasons, often leading to significant issues if not addressed promptly. The common signs and causes include:
- Leaking Water: One of the most obvious signs of refrigerator-related water damage is the presence of water pooling around the appliance. This could result from a damaged or clogged defrost drain, a malfunctioning water supply line, or even a blocked or frozen ice maker.
- Damaged or Loose Water Supply Line: The water supply line that connects the refrigerator to the main source can degrade over time. If it's damaged or not properly connected, it can leak water onto the floor behind the refrigerator, leading to water damage and electrical issues.
- Clogged Defrost Drain: Refrigerators have a defrost drain to remove condensation. If this drain becomes clogged with food particles or ice, it can cause water to accumulate inside the refrigerator and leak onto the floor.
- Malfunctioning Ice Maker: If the ice maker in the fridge is not functioning correctly, it can lead to leaks. Sometimes, the fill tube that supplies water to the ice maker can freeze or become misaligned, causing water to spill into the freezer or fridge compartments.
- Condensation: Condensation inside the refrigerator, especially around the door seals, is normal. However, excessive condensation might indicate a problem with the door seals or improper temperature settings, potentially leading to water damage.
- Faulty Drain Pan: Refrigerators have a drain pan underneath to collect condensation and defrost water. If this pan is cracked or not positioned correctly, it can leak water onto the floor.
- Worn Out Seals: The rubber gaskets or seals around the fridge and freeze doors are essential for maintaining a proper seal. If these seals are worn out, damaged, or dirty, they can allow warm air to enter, leading to condensation and water accumulation.
Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the defrost drain, inspecting water supply lines, and ensuring proper door seals, can help prevent water damage.
Water Damage From the Dishwasher
Water damage from a dishwasher can stem from various sources, often presenting noticeable signs that should not be ignored. A common indicator is leaking water around the dishwasher during or after the cycle, which could result from a damaged door gasket, a loose or worn-out hose, or a faulty pump.
- Improper loading of dishes can obstruct the spray arm's rotation, causing water to spray erratically, potentially leaking out of the appliance.
- Clogged or malfunctioning drain systems can lead to standing water inside the dishwasher, causing overflows and subsequent damage to the surrounding area.
- Deteriorated or disconnected water supply lines are another frequent cause, often resulting in significant leaks if not addressed promptly.
- Excessive detergent use or using the wrong type can create suds that overflow and spill out of the dishwasher.
It's crucial to address these signs promptly to prevent water damage to the flooring, cabinets, and adjacent structures, as well as avoid mold growth and mildew in the affected area. Regular maintenance, proper loading techniques, and timely repairs can significantly reduce the risk of water damage from your dishwasher.
Water Damage From the Washing Machine
Water damage caused by washing machines can manifest in various ways, often accompanied by distinct signs that should alert homeowners to potential issues.
- One common indication is water leakage around the machine during or after a cycle, which can result from damaged hoses, loose fittings, or worn-out seals.
- Overfilling or improper balancing of the washing machine can lead to excessive vibrations during the spin cycle, causing the machine to shift and release water onto the flood.
- Clogged or blocked drainage pipes and pumps can prevent proper water drainage, leading to water backups and spills.
- Additionally, aging or faulty internal components, such as the water inlet valve or the pressure switch, can malfunction, causing water to seep out.
- Deteriorating door gaskets or seals can allow water to escape during the wash cycle. It's also crucial to watch out for visible signs of rust and corrosion on the machine, which can weaken its structural integrity and lead to leaks.
Regularly inspecting hoses and fittings, ensuring proper loading, and addressing any unusual noises or movements during the wash cycle can help homeowners prevent water damage caused by their washing machines. Timely maintenance and prompt repairs are essential to avoiding extensive damage to the surrounding area and potential mold growth.
Water Damage From the Water Heater
Water damage resulting from a malfunctioning water heater can present itself in several noticeable ways, indicating potential issues that demand immediate attention.
- Leaking or pooling water around the base of the water heater is a primary and obvious sign, often caused by corrosion or a faulty temperature and pressure relief (TPR) valve.
- A deteriorating or cracked tank, which naturally occurs over time, can also lead to leaks.
- Excessive pressure in the tank due to a faulty pressure relief valve can cause leaks or even a sudden burst.
- Sediment buildup within the tank is a common cause of water heater issues, as it can lead to overheating, increased pressure, and eventual leaks.
- Loose or damaged pipe connections can result in water seepage. Rust and corrosion can affect both the tank and pipes, compromising their integrity and causing leaks.
- It's crucial to pay attention to discolored or rusty water, which can indicate internal rusting and an imminent risk of leakage.
Regular maintenance, such as flushing the tank to remove sediment, inspecting valves and pipes, and addressing any signs of corrosion, is essential to prevent water damage from a malfunctioning water heater. Homeowners should also consider replacing older units to reduce the risk of sudden leaks and extensive water damage.

Where is the Shut-Off Valve and Why You Should Know It’s Location
8/24/2023 (Permalink)
If you live in a single-family home, you should know where your shut-off valve is. Why? Knowing where the shut-off valve is can save your home from a flood and a lot of water damage. If you're experiencing a burst pipe or any other kind of plumbing issues that is causing flooding in your home, shutting off the valve will stop the water before it gets out of hand.
What Are Water Shut-Off Valves?
The knob or handle that allows you to shut down the water supply is referred to as a shut-off valve. It can be applied to an entire property or a specific area of a home or building. To avoid thousands of dollars in cleanup and repairs, knowing how to shut off the water supply in a timely manner is crucial.
Why Should You Know the Location?
There are several reasons for wanting to know where a water supply shut-off is located. These include:
- If work needs to be done on a fixture, supply pipe, etc., the water supply must first be shut off.
- If the building is going to be vacated for a considerable amount of time, shutting off the water supply is a good idea. If a pipe would burst or a water tank develops a leak, having the water shut off will help avoid costlier, excessive damages.
- To avoid complications, knowing the location of a shut-off valve will be extremely useful in the case of a plumbing emergency. Plumbers often find soaking towels or filled buckets under leaks because no one knew how to shut off the water.
Where Is Your Shut-Off Valve?
Though these kinds of valves can be found in many places, here are some common locations:
- Next to a water heater
- Under a sink/toilet
- Near a water meter, outdoors
- In the basement or at ground level
- On the perimeter wall of a building

Simple Plumbing Tasks You Should Know
7/26/2023 (Permalink)
Did you know, it is estimated that approximately $49 billion will be lost due to some kind of flood every year. For homeowners, the cost can also be astronomical, especially if flood insurance isn't in place. Can a lot of floods be avoided if you know some simple plumbing tasks like shutting off the water valve or spotting a frozen pipe? Absolutely.
However, there are many plumbing issues that occur that require a professional. Below are some tasks that will help you at least shut off the water supply or know how to prevent a flood. Here are some simple plumbing tasks that you should take note of in case of an internal plumbing problem that causes a flood.
Water Shut-Off Valves
The knob or handle that allows you to shut down the water supply is referred to as a shut-off valve. It can be applied to an entire property or a specific area of a home/building. To avoid thousands of dollars in cleanup and repairs, knowing how to shut off the water supply in a timely manner will help tremendously.
So, why should you know where the valve is?
- If work needs to be done on a fixture, supply pipe, etc. The water supply must first be shut off.
- If the building is going to be vacated for a considerable amount of time, shutting off the water supply is a good idea. If a pipe bursts or a water tank develops a leak, having the water shut off will help avoid costlier, excessive damages.
- To avoid complications, knowing the location of your shut-off valve will be extremely useful in the case of a plumbing emergency. Plumbers often find soaking towels or filled buckets under leaks because their customers don't know how to shut the water off.
Ok, so where is the shut-off valve?
- Next to the water heater
- Under a sink/toilet
- Near a water meter, outdoors
- In the basement or at ground level
- On the perimeter wall of a building
What Are the Signs of a Frozen Pipe?
Frozen pipes are a popular cause of flooding in the home. If you can catch a frozen pipe before it bursts, you can get ahead of a potential flood.
- A bulge or crack in a pipe with ice seeping out is a clear indication of a burst pipe.
- Frost on the outside.
- A bad smell from the drain or faucet.
- No water or slow trickle when a faucet is used.
- Whistling or banging coming from pipes or bubble sounds when a toilet is flushed
- Dampness, puddles, or rings on drywall or ceilings
What Are the Signs of a Burst Pipe?
- Fluctuating water pressure
- Discolored, smelly water
- Clanging or dripping noises in the walls
- Mold growth
- Puddles under sinks
- High water bills
- Water marks on walls or ceilings
Clogged Toilet
If you have a clog in your toilet and the water is starting to overflow, creating a flood in your bathroom - you need to know how to accurately unclog the drains and toilet to stop the flooding. You can always call a restoration team like SERVPRO, but the sooner you get to it, the better.
If the clog is somewhat minor, you can try a plunger, which is self-explanatory. If it's worst than that, you'll want to snake it. There are plenty of YouTube videos that will teach you how to use one successfully.
However, if you believe there is a bigger plumbing problem here, call us. SERVPRO Team Harvey is an experienced restoration company that specializes in water damage restoration, mold remediation, and many different cleaning services.
Plumbing Issues + Flooding = Mold
After any type of flood or water damage issue in your home, the chances of mold growing soars. If you develop mold, that's a bigger issue that needs to be addressed, as most mold is dangerous to live with. Luckily, we are not only experienced with water restoration, but with mold remediation as well.
It's also good to know the difference between mold removal and mold remediation. Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy. We understand mold, and so should you.
- Mold can float through the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating system. They can even hitch a ride on your clothing or pets.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. mold can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45%.

Signs You Need Help from a Water Damage Restoration Company
7/10/2023 (Permalink)
Water damage can be invisible until the degradation of your property from long-term exposure to many external and internal sources becomes severe. This normally happens when moisture seeps into the structure and ruins parts of your building. For example, a leaky roof or burst pipe may introduce an accumulation of moisture, which results in a variety of damages. It's crucial to address the issue as quickly as possible when you see signs of water damage.
However, most instances are either too big or too complicated for a homeowner to try to restore on their own - so, you may need help from a water damage restoration company to restore your property.
Water Damage + Drywall
Gypsum drywall is a porous material that absorbs moisture. When drywall gets wet, it becomes soft and soggy, which poses issues regarding the integrity of the building's structure. If your wall starts to feel mushy to the touch, it's a red flag that your walls have suffered water damage.
When water pools behind the paint, it stretches, causing a bubble on the wall. You'll likely need a professional to take a look to determine the extent of the water damage.
Water Damage + Wood Flooring
Excessive moisture on hardwood flooring is the main cause of buckled floorboards. You can spot this by noticing cracks in between boards, swelled edges, crowing, and the lifting of boards. When water is allowed to persist on your hardwood floors, such as from a spill or a rise in indoor humidity, it leads to a buildup of moisture that makes floorboards expand, contract, or pop up.
Water Stains
If you notice discoloration on your ceiling, usually a light or dark brown color, you're most likely looking at water damage. This could be due to a leaky appliance on the floor above or rainwater finding its way through your roof. If you have poor plumbing upstairs, this can cause water damage, creating these stains. In this case, you should have someone experienced in water damage restoration services to come take a look.
Mold Infestations
Mold thrives in damp or wet areas - especially in areas where moisture travels through the air, like in bathrooms or basements. If you start to notice mold growing, this could be a result of water damage. In this case, it would be smart to hire a professional mold remediation team to help remove the baseboards and determine the cause and extend of the water damage.
You can also detect mold by its odor, which could indicate where the water damage is coming from.
Sudden Water Puddles
If you found a random water puddle in your home, you're probably very confused unless the source is clear. If it's not, this usually means that your home has suffered water damage from a broken pipe. If you're not experienced in plumbing or water restoration, it's smart to call someone like SERVPRO ASAP.
Natural Disasters
Natural disasters can cause a tremendous amount of water damage. If you're in an area that is known for a lot of rain, storms, or flooding - you probably are aware of how much damage this can cause to your home. Although there are limited ways to prepare for a storm, you should always know to call professionals right away after you've noticed any kind of water damage.
Why SERVPRO is Your Best Bet

Rest assured, we provide additional services outside of water and fire damage. We also take care of mold remediation, storm damage, and a series of different cleaning services.
Getting on top of water damage before it causes further damage is crucial. When a water emergency occurs, reaching out to an experienced restoration company should be your first step. We will respond quickly so you don't have to deal with damaged materials, structural damage, or mold issues.

Why Plumbing Maintenance is Important
6/22/2023 (Permalink)
Keeping your plumbing system healthy with maintenance will not only keep the water coming into your home clean, but will also prevent potential damage and flooding in the future. If you haven’t had your sewer lines looked at in a long time or even your bathroom plumbing system, chances are you’ll deal with leaks in the distant future as well as mold and other issues. Here are some tips to help you ensure that your plumbing is up-to-date and in good shape.
How Often to Get Your Sewer Lines Cleaned?
You don’t want to mess with your sewer lines. Many homeowners do not notice any issues with your sewer until it’s too late. This may then result in some catastrophic problems for your home. A good rule of thumb is to have your home sewer lines cleaned out at least every 18-22 months. This may not be a schedule that is easy for you to remember, but think of it as a period between a year and a half to two years.
If you are experiencing certain issues like the following, it is best to have your sewer lines cleaned as soon as possible:
- Water pooling in the basement around the floor drain
- Sewage backup in the bathtub, toilet, or drain
- Drains working too slowly
- Odors coming from sewers
- Frequently clogged drains
- Pipes making gurgling sounds
- Water backing up into shower or bathtub when the washing machine is in use
Plumbing Problems that Can Cause Mold
Leaking sinks is one of the most common problems that cause mold. Sometimes, leaks can be hidden - so getting a professional to your own to identify where the leak is coming from is the first step. Not only is this causing water damage, but causing the risk of mold as well if you wait too long.
Clogged drains are another common problem. This can create standing water in your bathroom, creating germs, bacteria, and a bad smell. Fungal growth often happens when drains are clogged or sewer lines are blocked.
Keep Your Plumbing System Healthy
It is important to keep your plumbing system healthy, as it benefits the water that you use every day for cleaning, chores, showering, etc. as well as prevents damage. The damage, if not fixed right away, can cause even more damage like water damage to your floors, walls, etc., as well as mold growth.
If you’re experiencing any of these issues, let SERVPRO know - we will take care of and restore water damage, storm damage, and even mold remediation.

SERVPRO Team Harvey’s Water Restoration Steps
4/17/2023 (Permalink)
Each water damage scenario is usually a little different. Homeowners and business owners deal with water damage from burst pipes and floods, to sewer backups, and plumbing problems. Whatever the case may be, we have a 6 step process for water restoration. These steps detail our process for the typical water-damaged property.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
The Restoration process begins when you call us. SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City is available 24 hours a day for water emergencies, large or small. When you’re dealing with water damage, immediate action is crucial. Even a delay of a few hours can greatly increase the severity of the water damage.
When you call, you’ll be asked several questions:
- Your name and contact information
- Your insurance information (if applicable)
- The street address of the water-damaged home or business
- When did the flooding or water damage occur?
- What caused the damage? (If known)
- Is there electricity available? (On-site)
Step 2: Inspection & Water Damage Assessment
When responding to a water damage emergency, we begin with a detailed inspection of your home or property, including a damage assessment. At this stage, our professionals are trying to determine the scope of the damage so that we can develop an appropriate plan of action.
We will check for the source of moisture in your home or business. The source must be stopped before any restoration or drying of the building can be successful.
We will identify the category and classification of water damage to ensure our professionals restore your property based on industry guidelines. The level of contamination of the water will affect the specific restoration process we use.
We’ll inspect and test to determine the extent of damage and how far the moisture has traveled to ensure proper and complete restoration. In addition, we will inspect for safety concerns that may be evident. If there are any safety issues like lead or asbestos, please bring them to our attention.
Step 3: Water Removal/Extraction
After the inspection and damage assessment, the water extraction process begins. This step removes the majority of the water, as we use powerful pumps and truck-mounted units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons of water from your property.
If your home requires extensive restoration or cleaning, we can conduct an organized move-out to protect your belongings from further damage.
Our highly trained technicians will begin the water removal process almost immediately. Depending on the amount of water, we may use powerful submersible pumps in addition to industrial strength, wet/dry vacuums. Removing most of the water helps reduce drying time and helps prevent secondary water damage and mold and bacterial growth.
The water removal equipment we use include:
- Moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters that measure the extent of moisture saturation.
- Infrared cameras may be used to find “hidden” water behind walls and ceilings.
- Submersible and gas-powered pumps are used for continuous pumping of high-level water.
- Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.
Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification
Once the excess water has been removed, the floors and walls may appear dry, but a quick inspection will reveal they are wet to the touch. Nearly all building materials, like wood, drywall, and flooring materials, are porous and therefore retain water. This retained water can cause the materials to break down, warp, or cause mold damage.
Our professionals will use room measurements, temperature, and relative humidity to determine the optimal number of air movers and dehumidifiers to dry your home or business. We’ll carefully monitor the process using moisture meters until the materials return to acceptable drying goals.
Our drying equipment includes:
- Industrial-grade dehumidifiers help prevent secondary water damage like swelling or warping of floors, walls, and furniture.
- High-speed air movers create airflow across walls, carpets, pas, and furniture, which accelerates the evaporation of moisture.
Step 5: Cleaning and Sanitizing
Your walls, flooring, and ceiling will most likely require professional cleaning services. In addition to cleaning your property’s structure, we will clean your furniture, upholstery, clothing, and other restorable belongings damaged by the water. Most flooding and water damage also require professional odor removal and deodorization since wet materials have a very distinct odor.
We are trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. Our technical expertise and industrial grade scrubbers and fogging equipment go well beyond simply masking odors and other shortcuts that don’t work when your odor problem is serious or persistent.
When it comes to sanitizing treatments, depending on the scenario, we may use antimicrobial, antibacterial, or disinfectant treatments to clean your property.
Step 6: Restoration
Restoration is the final step! It’s the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-water damage condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet, or may entail major repairs such as reconstruction or various areas or rooms in a home or business.
If you need our restoration services, please contact us right away. You don’t want to let water sit in your home, causing more damage and getting more expensive.

Signs of Water Damage in Your Hoboken Home
2/15/2023 (Permalink)
Water damage tends to be invisible until the degradation of your property from long-term exposure to a myriad of external and internal sources becomes severe. This happens when moisture seeps into the structure and ruins parts of your building. For example, a leaky roof or burst pipe may introduce an accumulation of moisture which results in a variety of damages. It is important to address the issue as quickly as possible when you see signs of water damage in your Hoboken home. You may need to get help from a water damage restoration company to restore your property.
Not sure of the signs? SERVPRO can help you out:
Dark or Wet Spots
If you see discoloration on the ceiling, the interior and exterior walls, or even the floor - this is a sign of water damage. A professional like SERVPRO will be able to diagnose the issue and find out where the water is coming from. Once we’ve figured that out, we’ll restore it like new.
Bubbling, Cracking, or Flaking
If you start to see cracks, flakes, or bubbles on your walls - chances are, you’re dealing with water damage. Water seeps into the drywall creating these effects.
Puddles
This is the obvious sign. If you find a puddle of water somewhere in your home, this means you have a leak. If the puddle is under the sink - it could be a pipe issue. If it’s coming from the attic, chances are you have a roof leak. Regardless of where the water is coming from, let us help you fix it.
Water Sounds
Sometimes it’s difficult to see water damage, as it does a good job of hiding at first. However, if you hear rushing water or dripping sounds, you’ll want to get that checked.
Higher Utility Bills
A spike in your water bill without reason could also point towards a hidden leak. We can find the leak with our updated technology to help you solve the problem.
Damp Smells
A damp and musty smell is very recognizable. If you smell this, contact a professional right away. This could not only be water damage, but mold as well.
Buckling of Wood Flooring
Excessive moisture on a hardwood floor is the main cause of buckled floorboards. This can be spotted as cracks in between the boards, swelled edges, crowning, and the lifting of boards. When water is allowed to persist on your hardwood floorings, such as from a spill or a rise in indoor humidity, it leads to a buildup of moisture that makes floorboards expand, contract, or pop up.
If you’re noticing or experiencing any of the signs above, it’s time to reach out to a professional like SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City. We are water damage restoration specialists and are ready to restore your Hoboken home back to pre-water damage condition. We quickly extract the water and then dry your property using state-of-the-art equipment.

Tips For Hoboken Commercial Business Owners When Dealing with Water Damage
1/25/2023 (Permalink)
There are many different causes of water damage, and it is extremely important that commercial business owners understand what they are, how to prevent them, and where to turn for restoration help. Luckily, SERVPRO is well-educated and skilled in this, so below you will find tips for your Hoboken commercial business if you’re to deal with water damage.
Protect Yourself & Your Equipment
Water damage can not only pose a threat to the occupant’s wellbeing, but can also ruin your equipment. If water starts to come into your building, please do the following:
- Disconnect your technology from the walls and transport as much as you can to a safe place.
- Evacuate everyone that may be working in the flooded area.
- If you are to return to the building, please be sure you are wearing protective clothing. You don’t want the water to touch your skin, as there could be hazardous chemicals.
- Take pictures of the damage for your insurance company.
Find the Source
If you’re not aware of where the water is coming from, you’ll need to find it so you can try to do your best to make it less of a mess. Check the pipes in bathrooms, kitchens, etc. and ensure none of them burst; check for watermarks on the ceiling or drippage - this could be coming from the roof; check the windows, doors, etc. The faster you can spot the source, the less damage there could be.
Call Your Insurance Company ASAP
Once you have evaluated the area and took pictures, contact your insurance company right away so they are aware of the damage. The sooner they can help, the sooner you’ll get your funds to put everything back together.
What to Do After Flooding & What Not to Do
To Do:
- Remove excess water by mopping and blotting
- Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and desk/tabletop items
- Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions
- Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting
- Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying (in the summer)
- Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting
- Remove art objects to a safe, dry place
- Gather loose items from floors
Don’t Do:
- Don’t leave wet fabrics in place
- Don’t leave books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpet or floors
- Don’t use a vacuum cleaner to remove water
- Don’t use technology like computers, fax machines, etc.
- Don’t turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet

Tips to Protect Your Hoboken Home From Water Damage This Winter Season
11/29/2022 (Permalink)
Tips to Protect Your Hoboken Home From Water Damage This Winter Season
Water damage to your home can happen at any time of the year, but in the winter, your home may be especially susceptible. The wet weather and freezing temperatures can cause water to leak into the nooks and crannies of your house. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to prevent this. Here are some tips to protect your Hoboken home from water damage this winter season.
Preventing Ice Dams on the Roof
Ice dams are formed when ice collects at the edges of a roof. This typically happens when the upper portion of a roof is warmer than the lower portion. Snow on the upper portion melts faster and runs down to the cooler part of the roof where it freezes again, creating an ice dam. These are problematic because they block the water from melting snow from flowing off your roof, causing the water to accumulate and seep into your house through tiny cracks or gaps. It can also result in mold and mildew growth on your roof. Mold removal and remediation is a delicate process and nipping water damage in the bud is the best way to avoid it.
To stop ice dams from forming, you have to ensure that all parts of your roof are equally cold. This can be done by keeping your attic well-ventilated to maintain an evenly cold temperature. You should also seal any ceiling cracks or openings that may allow warm air from other parts of your house to enter the attic.
Clearing the Gutter
Keeping the gutter clear allows water to drain down and away from your roof, helping to keep water from collecting and creating a clog. You can do it yourself with gloves, a garden trowel, and a ladder, however, it may be better to get professional assistance, as this may be a bit dangerous. You can also install gutter covers to reduce the need to clear your gutter, but you should still check the gutter occasionally to ensure that it is not clogged with leaves and other debris, which are likely to collect at the corners and junctions.
Keeping Your House Perimeter Dry
After you clear ice, snow, and water from your roof and gutter, you need to make sure to keep the foundation of your house dry as well. Melting snow surrounding the perimeter of your home can seep into the soil and enter your house through cracks or leaks in your windows and doors. It can also saturate your foundation and basement walls, increasing the chances of mold forming in your home. The best solution is to shovel the snow away from your house before it melts. You can also seal up gaps or other openings in your basement walls to prevent water from seeping in.
Watching Out for Frozen Pipes
Due to the cold temperatures in winter, water in your water pipes can freeze and lead to high internal pressure in the pipes. If the pressure continues to build up, it can be enough to rupture your pipes, causing a huge amount of water to be released into your home. To prevent frozen pipes, you can insulate water pipes located in places of your home with freezing temperatures. In especially cold temperatures, it is recommended to let your faucets drip slowly to relieve pressure in the event your pipes have frozen. If water from your pipes stops flowing completely, it is best to call a plumber as soon as possible!
If you already have water damage in your Hoboken home, we understand your headache! Water damage remediation is a delicate process that requires the removal of any water that is still on the premises and then the careful cleaning, sanitization and restoration of any property that has been damaged.

Tips for New Jersey Businesses Battling Water Damage
11/22/2022 (Permalink)
Tips for New Jersey Businesses Battling Water Damage
One of the worst types of damage to a commercial business is water damage. Depending on the type of water damage, it could be extremely dangerous and detrimental to the safety of your employees and the structure of your building. We understand the concern, so we wanted to provide you with some tips for our local Hoboken and Union City businesses who are battling water damage to put your mind at ease.
Identify the Type of Damage
The source of the water damage makes a big difference in how the damage is mitigated. Identifying the source is the first step. There are generally three different types of water damage.
Clean Water Damage
Clean water damage is provoked by a broken appliance, faulty sprinklers, burst pipe, rainwater, etc. Although this type of water damage isn’t dangerous, per say, if it is not treated correctly, mold could develop - causing it to become a danger.
Gray Water Damage
Gray water damage is considered unsanitary due to the source or the amount of time it has been stagnant. This water damage is usually caused by a broken toilet, washing machine, or anything that could leak hazardous chemicals.
Black Water Damage
Black water damage is the most hazardous water to deal with. This comes from a natural disaster or a sewage problem. If your commercial business was affected by a storm, it’s important to seek professional help right away to avoid additional damage and clean up so you can get your business up and running again.
Note: Gray and black water damage is not signified by color. It is typically a rating system to decipher the severity of the damage. For example, a lake is not black in color, but would be considered black water due to the unknown bacteria and contents living within it.
Alert Your Business’ Insurance Company
As soon as the damage occurs, it’s important to alert your insurance company to submit a claim. After doing so, you may reach out to a professional to start the cleaning process. Whether it be water damage of any type or mold removal, SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City can handle it all. We can also assist in making sure that your damaged property has been properly submitted to your insurance company.
Act to Avoid Further Damage
If you’re in your commercial business building while a storm is causing a flood or if a pipe bursts, it’s important to try to get ahead of it as quickly as possible to avoid further damage. For example, try to block where the water is coming from, mop or throw towels down to try to keep up with it, and make sure you have a dehumidifier to run after you’ve successfully cleaned up the water. This will all help in the moment and should assist with protection of further damage.
Think Ahead
Along with a first aid kit, you should also have a flood control kit somewhere in your building in preparation. This kit should include sandbags, a wet vacuum, buckets, tarps, and mops. This will help in preparation of a natural disaster coming your way or help clean up a clean water incident.

Why Is Knowing Your Water Shut-Off Valve Location Important?
6/8/2022 (Permalink)
It is estimated that approximately $49 billion will be lost by businesses due to some kind of flood every year. For homeowners, the cost can also be phenomenal, especially if flood insurance isn't in place. Can all of that cost be averted by knowing the location of the water shut-off valve? No. But if an interior flood occurs due to a home’s or commercial building’s water system, shutting off the supply promptly can save a lot of money on water damage and cleanup.
Water Shut-Off Valves: What Are They?
The knob or handle that allows you to shut down the water supply is referred to as a shut-off valve. It can be applied to an entire property or a specific area of a home/building. To avoid thousands of dollars in cleanup and repairs, knowing how to shut off the water supply in a timely manner is crucial.
Why Should You Know the Location?
There are several reasons for wanting to know where a water supply shut-off is located.
- If work needs to be done on a fixture, supply pipe, etc., the water supply must first be shut off.
- If the building is going to be vacated for a considerable amount of time, shutting off the water supply is a good idea. If a pipe would burst or a water tank would develop a leak, having the water shut off will help avoid costlier, excessive damages.
- To avoid complications, knowing the location of a shut-off valve will be extremely useful in the case of a plumbing emergency. Plumbers often find soaking towels or filled buckets under leaks because no one knew how to shut off the water.
Where Is Your Water Shut-Off Valve?
Though these kinds of valves can be found in many places, here are some common locations:
- Next to a water heater
- Under a sink/toilet
- Near a water meter, outdoors
- In the basement or at ground level
- On the perimeter wall of a building
If you are unsure as to where your main water shut-off is (in your home or office), check out the property inspection report if you have it handy.

Signs You Need Help From A Water Damage Restoration Company

Water damage tends to be invisible until the degradation of your property from long-term exposure to a myriad of external and internal sources becomes severe. This happens when moisture seeps into the structure and ruins parts of your building. For example, a leaky roof or burst pipe may introduce an accumulation of moisture which results in a variety of damages. It is important to address the issue as quickly as possible when you see signs of water damage. You may need to get help from a water damage restoration company to restore your property.
Water Damage on Drywall
Gypsum drywall is a porous material that absorbs moisture. Wet drywall becomes soft and soggy, which poses issues regarding the integrity of the building’s structure. If your walls start to feel mushy or malleable to the touch, it is a clear red flag that your walls have suffered water damage.
When water pools behind the paint, it stretches the paint and causes an unsightly bubbling on your wall. You will likely need a professional to take a look at your property to determine the extent of the water damage.
Seeing Water Stains is a Sign of Water Damage
Discoloration in your ceiling – usually a light or dark brown color – could indicate water damage. This could be due to a leaky appliance on the floor above or rainwater seeping through the roof of your property. Poor plumbing can also allow water to soak the ceiling, resulting in these undesirable stains.
Mold Infestations Could Indicate Water Damage
Mold grows exceptionally well in areas with a lot of moisture in the air, like in bathrooms and basements. Noticing mold starting to grow along the skirting at the base of your wall could be the result of water damage. In this case, it would be best to hire a professional mold remediation team to help remove the baseboards and determine the cause and extent of the water damage.
You may be able to detect mold by its odor, which could indicate possible water damage. Once again, if you notice mold on your property in Hoboken or Union City, the best thing to do is to call a professional to implement mold remediation and restoration.
Sudden Water Puddles
It can be puzzling to find a sudden puddle of water appearing on your property where it should not be. If this is a common occurrence, it is likely that your property has suffered water damage from faulty pipes. Pipes can become damaged through repeated contraction and expansion due to fluctuating temperatures, which eventually cause them to leak. It is important to fix these pipes to mitigate the harm from water damage.
If you need help from a water damage restoration company in or near Hoboken/Union City, NJ, reach out to us at SERVPRO. Give us a call at (201) 656-0035.

Water Damage Restoration Tips For Businesses
4/21/2022 (Permalink)
Any water-related damage can be difficult to deal with as a business owner. Flooding caused by a burst pipe may cause a serious dent in your profits as you will need to close to repair this unfortunate damage. Meanwhile, if you choose to neglect leaking or any other water-related issues, this may cause further damage. In fact, ignoring water damage can be worse for your business as it may result in mold formation that causes structural damage, which is often costlier to fix. Hence, acting promptly when you face water damage is extremely important. Here are some of our top tips if you are to help you deal with water damage restoration.
Understanding The Extent of Damage
There are varying degrees of water damage. The source of the water and where this water arose from affect how you should respond to the damage. There are mainly three types of water damage- clean water damage, gray water damage, and black water damage.
- Clean water damage: damage caused due to a broken appliance. The water that emerges is usually clean, free of any contaminants.
- Gray water damage: damage caused when water emerges from a source that may be contaminated
- Black water damage: damage caused when water that contains viruses, bacteria, or parasites encounters your equipment. This is the most serious and dangerous form of damage because this water contains contaminants that can have effects on your health if ingested.
The type of damage also helps you determine what are the next steps you should be taking. If the water damage was caused by a spoilt appliance, it may be time to look into replacing it.
Settling Your Insurance
You should try to settle your insurance as soon as you can after you have settled the flooding or water damage. This helps you greatly in the claims process. Remember to take all the pictures so that you can have all the proof fully documented. Speaking to your insurance providers would also give you a greater sense of clarity about how to proceed next. However, if you feel extremely overwhelmed with recuperating from the losses due to the water damage, SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City is here to help! We can help to ease your burdens by dealing with the insurance paperwork so that you can deal with the more pressing matters. We can make the entire claims process stress free for you as we understand the worries that come along with dealing with water damage.
Hiring A Water Restoration Company
The above tips are better if you are certain that no serious damage has been done to your business. However, in more serious cases, it would be best to recruit a water restoration company to help you throughout this process. Companies such as SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City have years of experience that would allow us to best meet your needs. How Often Should You Clean Your Home Sewer Lines?
4/21/2022 (Permalink)
You most certainly do not want to get your home sewage system choked but little do homeowners know that they need to clean home sewer lines more often than they might have expected. Many of us do not notice any issues with our sewer until it is too late. This may then result in some pretty catastrophic problems for your home. The following guide will provide you with the right gauge on the number of times you need to have your sewer lines cleaned.
Cleaning Home Sewer Lines
Your sewer lines are out of sight and this makes them pretty insignificant to be etched on your mind for the most part. You want to avoid any issues with your sewer lines as they can get quite costly. By knowing how often you need to have them cleaned can help you avoid costly damages. A good general rule of thumb is to have your home sewer lines cleaned out at least every 18 to 22 months. This may not be a schedule that is easy for you to remember but just think of it as a period between a year and a half to two years. Bear in mind that this is just a general rule of thumb and every property differs in its sewer line cleaning needs. If you are experiencing certain issues like the following, it is best to have your sewer lines cleaned as soon as possible:
- Water pooling in the basement around the floor drain
- Sewage backup in bathtub, toilet, or drain
- Drains working too slowly
- Odors coming from sewers
- Frequently clogged drains
- Pipes making gurgling sounds
- Water backing up into shower or bathtub when the washing machine is in use
Causes of Clogged Sewer Lines
There are three main cases of clogged sewer lines and they include roots, grease, and bellied piping. Try not to pour grease down the drain because it will eventually solidify and clog up sewer pipes. Roots from trees or even shrubs can penetrate through pipes and this can cause sewer back-ups. You can try planting your trees and shrubs further away from your home sewer lines. A sagging pipe or bellied pipe usually takes place as a result of loose soil that can be found around it. If you have a garden or patch, review the soil around the area from time to time where you think your sewer lines may be located at.
Importance of Sewer Line Cleanup
Sewer lines transport waste water from your kitchen and bathroom to underground sewer mains. If they get blocked or clogged up, wastewater will leak into your property, thus causing property and water damage. Clogged sewer lines might be unseen but the problem is often much bigger than it really is. If the problem goes untreated, you may need to anticipate even more extensive damage both inside and outside of your property.
How Long Does Water Take To Damage Homes?
1/24/2022 (Permalink)
Both mold growth and structural damage can be caused by water damage in homes. To anyone living on the property, both of these can be dangerous. Immediate cleanup, when water damage occurs, is of the utmost importance for the safety of everyone. Why? In a short time, large amounts of damage can be caused quickly because water damage spreads. The best way to avoid high-cost cleanups and potential dangers is to act fast.
But why do you have water damage? It isn't always possible to prevent or predict the source of water damage, as there are many. It's just that common in homes and businesses.
The thing about water damage and the resulting severity is how it affects your home and when it's detected. It might be weeks before you find water damage, or days, or even minutes. What's most important is that you limit exposure to mold and mildew, prevent health and safety hazards, and repair any leaks and/or damage suffered as soon as you discover water damage.
What happens to a home when water damage occurs and how long does it take?
Longevity
Within minutes, your property can start experiencing damage by excessive moisture and water. Increasing the overall cost of repair and damage suffered, water contamination spreads immediately. Hardwood floors and furniture will start to swell after a few hours.
Permanently damaging things made from wood (like hardwood floors), wood begins to split and swell if damage is left untreated for days at a time. Fungi and bacteria will soon appear, and throughout the property, unpleasant odors will spread.
Once the growth of mold has taken root, after a few weeks, due to health hazards, evacuation of inhabitants may be necessary. Depending on the extent of water damage caused, the entire building may need to be repaired.
Structural Damage
A building can eventually be put in danger of collapse if the building suffers serious structural damage due to water. In unique ways, specific services and areas are affected differently by water.
Examples: In walls and carpets, you may notice discoloration. Where wooden floors are concerned, you may notice that they are swelling or warping.
Mold growth is common in carpet fibers. Water is absorbed by the fabric, making it hard to notice and or clean mold growth in carpeting. Here, you need professional help. Daily cleaning products aren't going to cut it.
The Dangers of Mold
Quickly spreading throughout the home, as the result of excess water, mold will grow and can cause health effects.

Making A Water Damage Claim Successfully
6/29/2021 (Permalink)
Whether at your home or business, if you have experienced water damage, you will want your insurance to cover it. This can include everything from the extraction of water to drying out and repairing the affected area, and everything in between. More often than not, material decontamination will be necessary – particularly in the case of flooding. How can you avoid being denied coverage for a water damage claim?
Coverage
Not only will you want to make sure you're covered for the initial damage done, but – as just suggested above – for the entire process of getting rid of excess water, drying materials, disinfecting, and more. In order to decontaminate materials affected by the water leakage, or remove them entirely, mold removal/testing may need to be done. You'll want that covered as well. To return your home or business to its original condition, whatever water damage restoration/repair is involved, ideally, you want your policy to pay for it.
Floods Versus Water Damage
In some cases, the words "water damage" will make a claim acceptable and coverable, whereas the word "flood" will not. To make absolutely sure of this, you’ll want to check with your insurance company.
In the mind of an insurance company, a "flood" does not come from inside your home or business (roof leak, tub overflow, air-conditioner overflow, septic tank backup, sewer backup, washing machine overflow, pipe leak, etc.), but from outside your home or business.
Here’s an example: If the river outside your home rises severely and overflows its banks, and from outside your home, water rushes in, “flooding” your home… you may not successfully submit a claim. That's the kind of flood damage that is not likely covered by most insurance policies.
If you can possibly submit a claim and avoid calling the water damage a flood, you stand a better chance of coverage.
Help with Submitting a Claim
If you can find a vendor that helps their clients with insurance claim submission, all the better. Unless a vendor has a relationship with an insurance company, they should be able to help you submit your claim with proper wording for the best chance of being covered. Because some vendors and insurance companies do have a close relationship, however, be sure of this before you contract the service.
Before hiring a restoration company, research them at length. Check reviews, their website, and more. You want them working for your best interests, not that of an insurance company.
Don’t Put Off the Process
One of the most important things to remember when dealing with water restoration post leakage or flooding is that the entire process should be expedited as much as possible. True, you want the job done thoroughly and expertly. But because the longer the water damage sits around, the bigger threat it poses, so you should contract a restoration company ASAP.
Additionally, insurance companies want to know about damage right away, not long after the fact. Wait too long, and your insurance company may try to say that the damage was existing before your claim, there were other contributing factors, and more.
Remember – Time Is of the Essence
When making a water damage claim, time is of the essence. There can be no denying this. When it comes to insurance companies and potential dangers from water damage, there's no time to waste. For this reason, and many more, contact the certified, experienced experts at SERVPRO when you need to deal with water damage and/or water restoration.
Don't put off repairing and/or restoring your home or business one more moment. We are available with 24-hour emergency service to be of assistance when you need us.

Water Damage: What Can Cause Burst Pipes?
6/29/2021 (Permalink)
What's one of the things that can change your home from a warm and cozy domicile to a nightmare in a heartbeat? Answer: Burst pipes. Damages resulting from the water flowing out of these pipes can potentially cause a wide array of issues. They can range from something as threatening as thriving mildew and mold to serious problems with a building's foundation, weakened walls, etc. What's more, for unsafe organisms like bacteria, a breeding ground can be created by the accumulation of water.
What's important here is that, upon discovery of the problem, the extent of damage must be determined quickly. The problem of burst pipes and flowing water must immediately be addressed. Following pipe repair/replacement, the affected area must be restored/repaired.
But what causes burst pipes? Why does the plumbing your business or home depends on every day sometimes fail? Let's take a look.
Clogging Causes Pressure
An enormous amount of pressure can be put on a pipe when it is obstructed due to something trapped within it – namely, a clog. The pipe will start expanding as the pressure buildup persists, and it may burst. Particularly if you don't do regular checks on your home's entire water system and/or sewer line, at any moment, bursts can occur.
Using Pipes That Are Low-Quality
Ordinarily, normal pressure passing through pipes should be easily endured no matter what the environment, provided it’s a reasonable amount. Due to "practicality", however, sometimes homeowners choose poorly designed plumbing. This lower quality piping, especially if not regularly checked, is going to be much more expensive down the line! So much for saving money. Now not only do you have to get the plumbing replaced, you will likely need water restoration services due to damage occurred as a result of flooding or leaking.
For pipe installations, consult a plumbing professional as to the best and most appropriate materials for fixtures and plumbing. Remember that pipe fittings and pipes are crucial when it comes to water quality, carbon footprint, durability, and cost. Every material has cons and pros. Without a professional assessment, you could end up putting the wrong kind of plumbing in your business or home.
Temperature Drops
If you are from the upper Midwest or Northeast, you are likely familiar with the headaches caused by burst pipes – affecting businesses, homes, and roads. When those temperatures drop (freezing and below), one of the common problems experienced in apartments, commercial buildings, homes, streets, and more is that of bursting pipes.
Not only does ice forming in plumbing create a clog, and thereby pressure, the expansion that takes place when ice forms is enough to burst some pipes. This is particularly the case where older, deteriorating plumbing is present.

Understanding The Rate Of Mold Growth In Flooded Homes After A Storm
6/25/2021 (Permalink)
Water damage is a problem that many people in the United States have to deal with every year. Without the proper experience, knowledge, and equipment, it can be impossible to handle the situation by yourself. One of the main concerns is how to remove the water and prevent mold growth in flooded homes. The fact is this is always time-sensitive because mold can grow very quickly with just a small amount of moisture. This article will explain about how you can avoid a mold infestation in your home after a storm.
About Mold Growth
The conditions in your home after a flood or a storm are simply perfect for mold growth. The scary part about this is that you cannot see the microscopic mold spores because of their size. With the moist and warm conditions in your home, mold can easily start growing on a wide variety of surfaces and can be very difficult to mitigate. It is important to get rid of any mold in your home because the mold spores have been known to have certain detrimental effects on our health. This is especially so if you or your loved ones already have pre-existing respiratory or immune problems. That being said, hiring the right, experienced team of professionals will be helpful in avoiding a mold infestation as long as you act with a sense of urgency. All that needs to be done is to remove the moisture in your home before the mold can even start growing.
Acting Fast
Similar to fire and smoke damage, it is also crucial to act fast when it comes to mold growth in flooded homes. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has stated that mold usually takes anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to infest your home, assuming that the conditions are conducive for mold growth. However, it is important to understand that there are many factors that can affect the rate of mold growth after a storm. Some of these factors include the materials that your household items are made from, the temperature in the interior of your home, the level of humidity, and even how dark it is.
Taking action immediately after a flood is so important because the chances of the mold spreading around your home increases greatly with time. The longer you wait to start the remediation and restoration process, the higher the chance of mold spores invading the air and affecting the health of you and your loved ones. Although mold typically starts growing within a day of the water damage, you might only start seeing the visible effects of the mold growth after about 20 days. As such, dealing with the moisture in your home as soon as water damage has been sustained will help to reduce the chances of any kind of mold growing in your property.
Professional Water Damage Restoration Services
If your home was affected by a serious flood, the best thing you can do is to hire the services of a competent water damage restoration professional. In the long run, you will find that this option is much more affordable and less effort and time-consuming than trying to fix the problem on your own. Professionals work fast and possess the proper equipment that can help to dry out your home in a timely manner. Furthermore, if you are dealing with contaminated water, it is best that you let the professionals to their job because it might have adverse effects on your health.
Preventing Water Damage Helps Reduce Mold Problems
6/2/2021 (Permalink)
Mold problems are common and something every property owner would worry about especially in relation to the amount of moisture in the air also known as humidity. When the environment is damp and there is a presence of organic material such as wooden furniture or wallpaper and other material that used to be alive, the high level of humidity will cause mold will thrive. Mold growth increases when such areas have a relative humidity of 60% and above and this can be easily caused if your property is experiencing water damage. Apart from causing bad air quality which can cause allergies and respiratory problems for tenants, mold problems is also very damaging for building materials.
Preventing water damage in your property is key to reducing mold problems. Here are some things you can take note of when it comes to checking for and preventing water damage in your space.
Check for Leaks
Keeping a sharp eye around the house especially the leaky areas is very important. Areas that are more likely to suffer from water leaks include bathtubs, sinks and faucets where the water piping runs and the water openings are located at. Not only are leaks a form of water damage, they are also a tell-tale sign or a bigger problem that is about to occur.
Inspect your Rooftop
Inspecting your rooftop for around twice a year would be good to find out if there are any leaks. Some fragile or brittle parts of your rooftop might have holes that causes water seepage into your home and promoting mold growth.
Clean your Gutter
The gutters are one of the main places where water leakage occur. When the gutters are neglected even for several months, there is always the likelihood of a choke or a problem with the draining process. By cleaning your gutter at least once every four months, water can flow smoothly and this decreases the possibility of water damage from excess water. The worst thing that can happen is water spillage from your gutter into your home.
Be Familiar with your Water Main
Knowing where your water main is important because you will be able to control it. The ability to control your water main can help a lot in preventing or mitigating water damage as you have the option to shut off the water should you experience any water leakage.
What You can do to Prevent Water Damage
Always check your property for water damage as the consequences can turn out to be disastrous when it is too late. Water damage can be both traumatic and financially troubling. When it comes to maintaining your home and dealing with water damage, it is best to contact water damage experts at SERVPRO where you can put your mind at ease with the help of your professionals. How Do Floods Damage floors?
4/16/2021 (Permalink)
Floods can cause huge damage to your floors if it has been submerged or wet for a long time. In the case where your floor is flooded with standing water, you should dry it with a cloth or mop within 72 hours. If you do not do so, the floor could be damaged by the water, and this will mean you need to fork out even more money to get the floors replaced or fixed. Mold can also grow if there is an abundance of moisture both above and within the floor. Some damage that may come as a result include damaged foundations, hardwood that has buckled or swollen laminate flooring. Hence, it is important to engage water damage repair and restoration services after a flood.
What to Do in the Event of a Flood?
You will first need to check out where the flood is occurring. If it happens in your basement, the first thing you must do is to turn off the basement breaker switch if it is not located in the flooded area. If the circuit breaker switch is located in the basement or flooded area, you may call an electrician or technician to help you turn it off. Once the switch has been turned off, you will be able to access the basement safely to evaluate the problem without worry.
Drying the Area
Before you attempt to air out or dry the floor, you should first take a look at the items affected and decide what can be saved. Furniture, carpets or other items that can still be saved should be removed from the affected area. You will also need to figure out where the source of the flood is from. For example, is it due to a leaking pipe? Or is it due to a faulty sump pump? If you have no idea where the source of the flood is coming from, it will be best to engage the help of a professional and not attempt to dry the floor all by yourself.
What You Can Do
If there is only a small amount of water on the floor, you may use towels to dry it up. Furthermore, you can rent other basic equipment like dehumidifiers to dry up the entire space, including the furniture and the wet floor. If some of your boxes have gotten wet, take out all the contents within the boxes and dry them out. If your carpet has become wet due to the flood, you can put dry towels over the carpet to absorb the water. Ensure that the temperature of the basement does not go higher than 75 degrees when you are drying the floor in the basement. In the case where the temperature exceeds 75 degrees, the growth pace of bacteria will quicken up, and bacteria will multiply in the basement.
Hardwood Flooring
If your flooring is made of hardwood, you will need to be extra cautious. Because of the tough nature of hardwood, it does not absorb much moisture. However, at the same time it will make releasing the moisture even more difficult once the hardwood has absorbed it. If the flooding occurs in an area with hardwood flooring, the first thing you should do is check the floor to see if it can still be salvaged. If your hardwood flooring has merely buckled a bit, it is likely that the flooring can be salvaged. If you are thinking of how you can dry hardwood, you should consult a professional.
In the event of flooding, professionals like SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City are able to help with drying out the place. Our team of experts can assess the situation quickly and effectively get to work in a short amount of time to salvage your home. Feel free to contact us to find out more about the services we offer today!
Why Is Water Extraction Important In Damage Restoration?
4/9/2021 (Permalink)
Understanding the role that water extraction plays in damage restoration can be beneficial in protecting your home. Read on to find out more.
Water damage from floods, burst pipes, damaged grounds, or other causes can be extremely distressing for homeowners. This is especially so when you cannot figure out the source of the problem and need immediate water damage restoration. This is where water extraction comes into play as it serves to stop the excess water and extract it so that restoration can begin. When water extraction is done in time, it can prevent extensive damage on the property. Whether you need immediate water extraction or want to protect your home in case of water damage, understanding the role that water extraction plays in damage restoration can be beneficial.
Understanding Water Extraction
Water extraction is a process that removes excess water from the flooring and grounds of a home. This complex task should be carried out by professionals because they are the ones with the necessary expertise, training, equipment, and tools. Attempting to do this by yourself will most likely be ineffective. The purpose of water extraction is to lower the risk of water damage, prevent mold growth, and restore the home to its previous condition.
Water Extraction Vs. Water Mitigation
In addition to water extraction, water mitigation also plays an important role in water damage restoration, but they are two different processes. After water extraction has been carried out, water mitigation is what will come next. In this process, all the unsalvageable objects and parts of the home will be removed from the area so that the loss is reduced. This includes the removal of equipment, furniture, drywall, and flooring. When water mitigation is done after water extraction, not only will further damage be avoided, the property will also be stabilized.
Importance of Water Extraction
When excess water is left unattended, it will start to seep into the grounds of the home. This will damage the property’s foundation. In addition, mold tend to grow in moist places, which can affect health. Hence, timely water extraction is important in minimizing water damage.
The Process of Water Extraction
Water extraction should be left to professionals as they have the complete know-how on the process. Here is an outline of the standard water extraction process:
- Identify the source of the excess water and stop the water from coming out
- Search for safety hazards, such as electrical sockets
- Look at the extent of water damage by using moisture meters and thermal imaging
- Extract water and dry the entire area, including places that are hidden from sight
- Disinfection and sanitization
- Dehumidify the home to get rid of leftover moisture

Top Tips to Prevent Water Damage This Winter Season
1/27/2021 (Permalink)
Water damage to your home can happen at any time of the year, but in winter, your home may be especially susceptible. The wet weather and freezing temperatures can cause water to leak into the nooks and crannies of your house. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to prevent this. Here is a helpful list to guide you in keeping your home dry this winter.
These are problematic because they block the water from melting snow from flowing off your roof. The water can accumulate and seep into your house through tiny cracks or gaps in your roof. It can also result in mold and mildew growth on your roof.
Keeping the gutter clear allows water to drain down and away from your roof which also helps to keep water from collecting on your roof. This is an unappealing task but it is very important in preventing a clog. You can do it yourself with gloves, a garden trowel, and a ladder. However, it may be better to get professional assistance, as this may be a bit dangerous. You can also install gutter covers to reduce the need to clean your gutter, but you should still check the gutter occasionally to ensure that it is not clogged. Leaves and other debris are most likely to collect at the corners and junctions of the gutter.
You can also seal up gaps or other openings in your basement wall to prevent water from seeping in.
Watching Out for Frozen Pipes
Due to the cold temperatures in winter, water in your water pipes can freeze over and lead to high internal pressure in the pipes. If the pressure continues to build up, it can be enough to rupture your pipes, causing a huge amount of water to be released into your house. To prevent frozen pipes, you can insulate water pipes located in places of your home with freezing temperatures. In especially cold temperatures, it is recommended to let your faucets drip slowly to relieve pressure in case the pipes have frozen. If where water from your pipes stops flowing completely, it is best to call a plumber as soon as possible because it is likely that the pipe has frozen.
Dealing With Water Damage in Your Hudson County Basement
12/22/2020 (Permalink)
Dealing With Basement Water Damage
Basements are probably some of the most susceptible areas against water damage. In an insurance industry study, almost every home with a basement has experienced water damage at some point. Some of the most common basement water damages are caused by:
Overflowing Roof Gutter – often caused by heavy rain, your roof gutter may have gotten clogged up by the accumulation of leaves, twigs, or other debris. As a result, water that cannot flow properly tends to find its way into your basement through your home's foundation or cracks on the wall. Regular maintenance can help to prevent such problems from occurring when there is bad weather.
Broken Pipes – also known as a common cause of water damage to basements, leaking or burst pipes can be frustrating. Again, regular maintenance or checks can help to prevent this from occurring.
Overflowing Groundwater – while most homes have a drainage system that can help to prevent groundwater flooding, during the rainy season, the groundwater level may end up rising higher than what the drainage system can handle. When this occurs, water may find its way into your basement through cracks in your home's foundation. A curtain drain installation can help to prevent such problems.
Sewage Backup – when the sewer drain is clogged, water cannot pass through, thus causing sewage backup. The wastewater may flow towards your home's direction and enter your basement. Avoid entering the wastewater and reach out to a professional immediately to fix the issue.
If your basement has become flooded, take note of the following:
Turn off your main circuit switch and unplug all your electrical appliances.
Understand the differences between clear water, grey water, and black water before entering the water. Avoid entering blackwater because it contains human waste and potentially harmful chemical substances that may harm you upon skin contact. If the water is clear water or greywater, they are not as dangerous.
Prioritize which items are the most important to salvage
Do not allow your children to play in the floodwater.
Always disinfect after coming into contact with floodwater.
Salvaging your basement from a flood is a time-sensitive situation. Consider reaching out to a reliable, professional service available to respond to emergencies 24/7 to assist you instead of cleaning up the basement on your own, as they are best equipped with the tools and equipment needed to pump out the floodwater and dry out your basement. The faster you can remove the floodwater, the lesser the possibility of mold growth in your basement.
Aside from that, a professional company can also help you navigate your insurance claims quicker by advising you on the documentation required. Be prepared to take photos of the damages and keep a record of the expenses (including receipts) of the restorations and repairs required.
If you require emergency water damage restoration services in Hoboken or Union City, our professionals are available 24/7 at SERVPRO for consultation.

Top Tips to Dry out a Flooded Area to Prevent Mold
6/8/2020 (Permalink)
Mold infestation is one of the many consequences of flooding. Home flooding can occur in a variety of ways. Water pipes can burst and lead to flooding as well as adverse weather conditions. When this happens, homeowners must act fast to ensure that any water damage that occurs does not become permanent. Mold is made up of tiny fungi that grow in areas that are moist and warm. They reproduce by releasing spores into the air and these spores can cause serious allergic reactions. Worse still, mold often grows in hard-to-see areas so it can still pose a problem long after the flooding problem is sorted out. By taking the following measures, homeowners can ensure that they keep mold away from their homes after flooding.
Safety Matters
Before you tackle any standing pools of water in your house, ensure that any electric power is switched off. Water is a good conductor of electricity and can cause expose you to the risk of electrocution if the water came into contact with any electrical outlets. Ensure that you wear protective gear to protect you from sharp objects that may be hidden by the water or bacterial infection from dirty water.
Identify The Source Of The Flooding
This is a logical first step in dealing with any flooding problem. If the flooding is caused by a weather phenomenon, there is not much that can be done until the weather clears and the flooding stops. If it is caused by a burst water pipe, fixing the plumbing would bring the flooding to an end. Remember to switch off the water mains as soon as possible to limit the extent of the flooding.
Remove Any Standing Water
Once the source of the flooding is fixed, the next step is to remove all the standing water in the affected area. One can use a vacuum cleaner although bringing professionals with the right equipment tends to yield better results. As you are doing this, remember to maximize air circulation to prevent mold from setting in. Mold thrives in humidity and keeping fresh air circulating will limit the ability of mold to take root. You can do this by opening windows, using fans, dehumidifiers, and the AC (if you can safely access your electric power).
Remove and Dry Any Carpets
Carpets are often a prime target for mold infestations because they absorb a lot of water and trap moisture between the fibers. If your carpet has absorbed any water, ensure that that you try and suck as much moisture from the carpet as possible. You can easily do this with a vacuum cleaner. Once this is done, place the carpet outside to dry. Sunlight not only dries the carpet but kills any mold or bacteria that may have started to form on the carpet.
Alternatively, you can have the carpet professionally cleaned and dried by professionals. With their specialized equipment, professional carpet cleaners are better placed to ensure that your carpet is thoroughly cleaned, dried, and any mold in the fibers destroyed.

Top Tips to Protect Your Home From Water Damage This Winter Season

Winter is upon us which means that your home may be susceptible to water damage. Here is how you can prevent it!
These are problematic because they block the water from melting snow from flowing off your roof. The water can accumulate and seep into your house through tiny cracks or gaps in your roof. It can also result in mold and mildew growth on your roof.
Keeping the gutter clear allows water to drain down and away from your roof which also helps to keep water from collecting on your roof. This is an unappealing task but it is very important in preventing a clog. You can do it yourself with gloves, a garden trowel and a ladder. However, it may be better to get professional assistance, as this may be a bit dangerous. You can also install gutter covers to reduce the need to clear your gutter, but you should still check the gutter occasionally to ensure that it is not clogged. Leaves and other debris are most likely to collect at the corners and junctions of the gutter.
Keeping Your House Perimeter Dry
After you clear ice, snow and water from your roof and gutter, you need to make sure to keep the foundation of your house dry as well. Melting snow surrounding the perimeter of your home can seep into the soil and enter your house through cracks or leaks in your windows and doors. It can also saturate your foundation and basement walls, increasing the chances of mold forming in your home. The best solution is to shovel the snow away from your house before it melts. You can also seal up gaps or other openings in your basement wall to prevent water from seeping in.
Watching Out for Frozen Pipes
Due to the cold temperatures in winter, water in your water pipes can freeze over and lead to high internal pressure in the pipes. If the pressure continues to build up, it can be enough to rupture your pipes, causing a huge amount of water to be released in your house.

While water is vital to our existence it can lead to a number of issues. Too much water is definitely a problem many individuals face on a day to day basis. Here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/ Union city we've seen a great deal of flood incidents. Pictured in the photo you see the ceiling panels beginning to slouch down as a result of flooding. The water is absorbed by the panels and if not treated properly can lead to a case of mold (which is another service SERVPRO provides). Our crew went into this job with the acquired skill that comes with doing this so often. They removed all the water from the job and then worked from there. The owner of the building was thrilled that we could fix as much as we did.

Although the frosty breeze and sparkling snow can be breathtaking during winter, there are risks we must be aware of. Winter can be enchanting but this is the season where frozen pipes can be an awful disaster. This change in weather can cause temperatures to drop to extremely low levels and can cause pipes in your home to freeze and burst. If pipes are not properly insulated or if there are cracks or gaps where the pipe enters your home, this can cause the pipes to freeze easily. During the dramatic temperatures, water freezes and expands continually and eventually the pipes can burst. Be sure to maintain and check your pipes regularly to help avoid these situations. If you find yourself in this position, you can contact our location at SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City and we will be glad to provide our services. You can call twenty four hours a day seven days a week, we're #heretohelp.
