SERVPRO's Advanced Technology for Restoration Needs
10/19/2023 (Permalink)
When it comes to the restoration process of a home or a business, you need the best and most advanced technology to get the job done accurately and successfully. With that said, the past few decades has seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques in the restoration industry. These advancements allow SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.
The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets practical standards for restoration cleaning. The IICRC S500 Water Damage Guide is a specific set of practical standards that incorporate the field of psychometry, which involves the manipulation of temperature and relative humidity to remove moisture and dry a property quickly and effectively.
With that said, let's get into the advanced equipment that SERVPRO Team Harvey uses during the restoration process of water damage.
Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment
Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure, and monitor a property's moisture levels. Recent advances like infrared cameras, can help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor. These cameras may be used to identify water locations for a thorough water removal. Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation.
Water Extraction Equipment
Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business. Submersible and gas-powered pumps are used for continuous pumping of high-level water and truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.
Drying Equipment
Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining water from ceilings, walls, and floors of your home or business. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling of warping floors, walls, and furniture. High-speed air movers cause moisture to evaporate at a faster pace and industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.
Odor Removal and Deodorization
Water and fire damage often causes powerful odors. The machines we use remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process. We use air scrubbers and thermal foggers, as well as deodorization agents.
Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Antimicrobial Treatments
The use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property. We use deodorization products that control odors from water damage and disinfectant products to stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, mold, and other harmful microorganisms.
Water Damage Restoration
Whether you're dealing with plumbing issues that caused water damage, a bad storm that caused flooding, or any other reason that led to water in your home, we're here to help. - Water Removal/ Water Extraction
- Drying and Dehumidification

When various materials burn, the soot and residue they create differs greatly and requires a specific cleaning procedure. The steps listed below is the process for a "typical" fire damage restoration.
- Emergency Contact
- Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
- Immediate Board-Up and Roof Tarp Service (if needed)
- Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

Top Tips For Safe Animal Waste Disposal
4/26/2022 (Permalink)
For pet owners, their pets are part of their family. However, it is just human to loathe picking up after them. Pet waste can be a nuisance but as a responsible pet owner, picking up dropping is part and parcel of caring for a pet. The basic step is to simply pick up after them, but what is the correct procedure to dispose of pet dropping? To ensure you are doing it the right way, here are some animal waste disposal tips that you can follow.
Proper Animal Waste Handling
The first basic step that all pet owners should already be aware of by now is to scoop up your pet’s dropping in either a plastic bag or a biodegradable packaging. The bag then needs to be tightly sealed to remove any air before being placed inside yet another bag before disposing it off in a garbage bin. If you need to handle a high volume of animal waste, you can consult a professional biohazard cleanup specialist who will make use of the proper channel to prevent contamination.
Double Bagging Animal Waste
Not every pet owner actually double bag their pet’s dropping as they regard it as a waste or as extra work. However, it is truly an important step to prevent the dropping from accidentally spilling during handling. Double bagging can also protect the inner bag should it burst when garbage is compacted at the garbage center. This is also the reason why removing as much air as possible before double bagging the inner bag is important as excess air can cause the inner bag to explode.
Flushing Dog Waste
This is the most recommended animal waste disposal option if your home is connected to the local treatment sewage system. Septic tanks are not designed to contain animal waste and waste flushed down the toilet can be washed into the waterways. Bags are also not supposed to be flushed down the toilet as they may cause your toilets to be clogged. For cats, their litter belongs in the garbage as cat litter is made from a material that could damage pipes and septic tanks when it gets mixed with water.
Tackling Odor
For domestic pets that are not toilet-trained, there may be instances whereby they will defecate anywhere around the house. Animal waste emits a strong odor that can be hard to removed, especially on fabric. If you ever have to face such a situation, always seek professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services to get your belongings back into their original condition.
Responsible Pet Owner
Anyone can be a pet owner but not everyone is a responsible pet owner. The tips we have shared in this article can guide you on how to better handle your pet’s dropping. The tips are simple to follow yet they are highly useful in helping you and your pets to co-exist without inflicting harm to the environment. For professional biohazard cleanup or carpet and upholstery cleaning services, seek the professional services of our cleaning and restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Hoboken / Union City. We are available around the clock or for non-emergency cases, we can be reached through an online request.
Top Tips To Choose The Right Air Duct Cleaning Company
4/21/2022 (Permalink)
Routinely, both homes and commercial buildings need air duct cleaning. One air duct cleaning company may accomplish this differently than another company, however. The better you comprehend the differences, the more likely you are to hire the company that's appropriate for your needs. Rather than simply picking a company at random, it pays to do a little research and know the right answers to certain questions.
So, here are the questions to ask when hiring an air duct cleaning company.
How Much Will it Cost?
If price is a consideration, ask for an estimate before the job is booked. Once you are satisfied with the expected costs, ask the following questions if you want to know the true value of a company.
What Results Can I Expect From Cleaning HVAC Vents?
You should see less dust once your home’s HVAC vents have been cleaned. With better airflow, you may even see a dip in your utility bills. Odors could lessen after vent cleaning, as well.
In some cases, if respiratory issues were occurring before the cleaning, the sufferer may notice improvement afterward.
Does the Company Have Certifications and Qualifications?
If the company you're considering has NADA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) certification, all the better. Find out if they also have certification for mold remediation, should you run across a mold issue. Certification generally means that a company has invested money and time into professionalism and training.
How Does the Air Duct Cleaning Company Carry Out its Job?
Find out precisely what it is the company plans on doing and how it will accomplish the task. Example: Ask if the evaporator coil will be cleaned? If you get a blank stare or several seconds of silence, be forewarned! The results of the service can be greatly impacted by this very critical component.
Entering crawl spaces is likely going to be necessary for this service. If the company you’re talking to doesn't do crawl spaces, there could be a problem. Another question to ask is whether they will pull the blower to appropriately execute the cleaning project. Again, if they can't answer you right away, move on to another company.
What Type of Equipment is Used?
The shop vac that you use in your home doesn't provide half the power that is required by equipment used in professional vent cleaning. A minimum of 5000 CFM capacity should be used for residential duct systems. Find out about the vacuum equipment the company uses and its cubic feet of air per minute.
Here's the Best Air Duct Cleaning Company You Can Hire

Top Tips to Maintain Carpet Cleanliness
4/5/2022 (Permalink)
The carpets in your house are one of the huge initial investments as a new homeowner. Due to the hefty price tag attached to purchasing a carpet, you would wish to steer clear from replacing the carpet too frequently. The key to this would be maintaining a good level of carpet cleanliness on a frequent basis. The cleanliness levels of your carpet depend on the rules that you set out in your household and with a few simple tweaks in your behavior, maintaining carpet cleanliness will be easier than ever! Read on to find out our top tips that will prevent your carpets from getting too much dirt on them.
No Shoes indoors
Shoes not only bring in dirt but also germs, toxins, and other bacteria. You can make it a rule for both your family members and your guests to remove their shoes at the door. This prevents the dirt on their shoes from getting transferred onto carpets. For individuals who are less comfortable with this idea, you can also designate house shoes and slippers for them.
Getting Good Doormats
However, if implementing the no shoes rule is something you struggle with, another alternative would be to get good doormats for your home. Doormats help to cut down on a lot of the dirt that can be brought back into your home. It’s essential that you clean out your doormats too, though! A dirty doormat won’t be able to get the dirt off well from your shoes and might end up serving no real purpose.
Cleaning Stains Immediately
Have you ever accidentally spilled a glass of apple juice onto your carpet, only to dab it with tissues and never think about the stain again? That is the total opposite of what you should be doing! Spills and stains are one of the fastest ways to age your carpets and cause severe damage to them. For most types of stains, simply using tissues on them is insufficient. Often, you should be employing other cleaning agents to really get the stain out.
Getting A Good Vacuum
You may be vacuuming your home on a regular basis but the type of vacuum that you are using can play a big role in determining how clean your carpets get. A good vacuum can really help to suck up all the small particles that sweeping using a broom is unable to do so. Certain vacuums are also specially built for cleaning carpets and different vacuums are built with different filtration capabilities, which affects their performance.
Getting Professional Cleaning
The professionals know best. Professional carpet cleaning entails a good, deep cleaning of your carpets. Although you may be cleaning your own carpets on a regular basis, professional cleaning is often more thorough and can aid in removing the dirt that you may have previously missed. We offer a range of different cleaning services as we implement different methods when cleaning. Look at our before and after photos to see the stark changes after our professional carpet cleaning!

The restoration and remediation industry is a specialized one indeed. Rapid advancement in the techniques and technology used in the industry has been occurring for the past few decades. SERVPRO, as an industry leader, is on top of its game and completely familiar with any and all techniques, technologies, treatments, chemicals, and more. To get your property back to the condition it was in before your loss, we operate effectively, reliably, and quickly.
In many cases where water damage is or was a problem, more than simple staining may occur. Any time that liquid is involved, mold can end up being a result, as well. In cases where mold and other contaminants are present, specialized treatment must be used. Here, antimicrobial treatments are a recommended method.
Treatments That Discourage Germs
Antimicrobial treatments, germicides, and sanitizing agents can be used to treat areas as part of the remediation process following water damage. To remove contaminants and/or odors from your property, and clean it thoroughly, cleaning agents that are approved by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will likely be required.
SERVPRO uses the following:
- To control excessive odors, deodorization products are utilized.
- To stop the growth of mildew, fungi, bacteria, and other microorganisms considered harmful, disinfection products are utilized.
Finding The Problem
Before drying and follow-up treatment can begin on an area that has been affected by moisture, it must be detected in the first place.
Sometimes, but not always, it's evident when an area of your home has been damaged by moisture. Professionals use the latest technology where measurement equipment and moisture detection are concerned. We use specialized equipment to measure, detect, and monitor the moisture levels in a property. We can detect water through a floor, ceiling, or wall thanks to infrared cameras and other recent advances.
SERVPRO uses the following:
- The moisture saturation extent is measured by hygrometers, sensitive moisture detectors, and other meters.
- For thorough water removal, the water or moisture location is identified, quite possibly with the use of an infrared camera.

Water Damage Timeline
Water damage can happen within mere minutes and if no immediate action is taken, the situation may spiral out of control and cause massive damage.
Within Minutes
Water spreads throughout the whole property within minutes and saturate everything that gets in its way. It is then absorbed into floors, walls, belongings, and upholstery which can still be salvaged if the scale of damage is still manageable. The water damage process may cause furniture to bleed and carpets to permanently stain as well as cause belongings like books, photographs and other products made of paper to warp and swell.
Within First 24 Hours
Within just the first day, water damage will cause the drywall of the house to start deteriorating and breaking down along with any metal surfaces to start seeing signs of tarnish. Furniture will also begin cracking up and other belongings will start producing a musty odor.
The Next Day Up to a Week
If no cleaning and restoration is done, mold and mildew will start to grow and spread whereas the windows, doors, and studs will start swelling and warping and eventually fall off their frame. The same goes with other wooden items around the house like furniture and flooring. These in turn may cause serious biohazard contamination.
SERVPRO 24-Hour Cleaning and Restoration
To ensure that you get water damage managed efficiently, always seek emergency response services immediately. With our 24-hour cleaning and restoration facilities, we can help you salvage as much as possible to help you turn your life around after a catastrophe.
Why Is Water Extraction Important In Damage Restoration?
4/16/2021 (Permalink)
Water damage from floods, burst pipes, damaged grounds, or other causes can be extremely distressing for homeowners. This is especially so when you cannot figure out the source of the problem and need immediate water damage restoration. This is where water extraction comes into play as it serves to stop the excess water and extract it so that restoration can begin. When water extraction is done in time, it can prevent extensive damage on the property. Whether you need immediate water extraction or want to protect your home in case of water damage, understanding the role that water extraction plays in damage restoration can be beneficial.
Understanding Water Extraction
Water extraction is a process that removes excess water from the flooring and grounds of a home. This complex task should be carried out by professionals because they are the ones with the necessary expertise, training, equipment, and tools. The purpose of water extraction is to lower the risk of water damage, prevent mold growth, and restore the home to its previous condition.
Water Extraction Vs. Water Mitigation
In addition to water extraction, water mitigation also plays an important role in water damage restoration, but they are two different processes. After water extraction has been carried out, water mitigation is what will come next. In this process, all the unsalvageable objects and parts of the home will be removed from the area so that the loss is reduced. This includes the removal of equipment, furniture, drywall, and flooring. When water mitigation is done after water extraction, not only will further damage be avoided, the property will also be stabilized.
Importance of Water Extraction
When excess water is left unattended, it can start to seep into the grounds of the home. This will damage the property’s foundation. In addition, mold tends to grow in moist places which is why timely water extraction is important in minimizing water damage.
The Process of Water Extraction
Water extraction should be left to professionals as they have the complete know-how on the process. Here is an outline of the standard water extraction process:

Which Drape Cleaning Mistakes To Avoid
4/6/2021 (Permalink)
Curtain cleaning is often overlooked in our homes, but did you know that cleaning your curtains regularly is good for your health? Here are some drape cleaning mistakes we tend to make.
Despite how the fact that curtains are a common household item, you would be amazed to know that there are many common drape cleaning mistakes that people tend to make. While one group assumes that curtains do not require cleaning in general, another group may be cleaning them the wrong way. Below are some common mistakes to avoid when cleaning your curtains:
Infrequent Cleaning
This is considered the most common mistake that people tend to make because people tend to believe that curtains are resistant to dirt since they are not constantly in use. Some may even wash the curtains on a yearly basis, only as a form of formality.
However, the truth is, curtains should be cleaned regularly because most curtain fabric tend to attract dust and dirt which are not easily visible. This provides germs and other organisms which cause diseases to thrive and may pose as a serious risk for you and your family’s health.
Use of Unsafe Cleaning Products
Although there is a wide range of cleaning products available, not all are safe. When it comes to cleaning curtains, people may not consider how toxic the cleaning products can be. Depending on the material of your curtains, they may react differently to cleaning products. This can cause serious health issues especially for people with respiratory difficulties such as asthma.
Lack of Moisture Control When Dry Cleaning
When people clean their curtains, moisture level may be the last thing on their mind. However, poor moisture control causes a lot of damage to curtains. This could lead to tight creasing or even shrinkage in your curtains. When dry cleaning, understand what level of moisture you need to maintain it at.
Rushed Cleaning
We understand the cleaning your home is no easy task, and you might be hoping to finish all the tasks as quickly as possible. However, doing a rushed cleaning job on your curtains may be damaging to it. They may end up with stains or creases when cleaning it is not carried out properly.
Cleaning Curtains the Same Way Regardless of Fabric
Some may assume that the same cleaning technique applies to all curtains. However, different fabrics require different methods of maintaining their condition and cleaning them. With a lack of understanding, we may inadvertently do more harm than good to our curtains.
Doing It Yourself
Although it may seem easier and more cost-effective to do it yourself, we might be less experienced in working with different fabrics and knowing what techniques or cleaning products work best for our curtains. In this case, working with a professional cleaning company may be the best way to go.
Why Work with SERVPRO?
Equipped with the expertise and equipment required to protect and clean your curtains, SERVPRO of West Somerset County excels in cleaning fine fabrics using suitable cleaning methods. At SERVPRO, we carefully check the fabrics to determine which of our five cleaning methods suit your fabrics the most. If you need your drapes or blinds cleaned, contact us now!
Did Storm Damage Destroy Your Roof?

Did Storm Damage Destroy Your Roof?
Your home’s roof is constantly exposed to the elements and bears the brunt of seasonal changes and harsh weather conditions. To ensure that your roof stays in good condition, it is vital to check on it, especially in the aftermath of weather events like storms. A strong storm can inflict various kinds of storm damage on the roof. Signs of such damage include wet walls, water spots on the ceiling, faulty or missing roof shingles and damaged roof flashing. If left unchecked, even something as small as a leak can cause more serious damage to the roof and your home’s interior, i.e. water damage. Here are some types of roof damage to look out for after a storm has occurred.
Damage by Wind
Strong windstorms can cause damage to your shingles, puncturing them, removing them, or even just lifting them off a little. When this happens, spots are left open in your roof and leaks can occur through them when it rains. Additionally, flashing can go missing along the edges of the roof, skylights, chimneys, and vents. Windstorms can also cause debris to fall onto your roof and damage it. It is important to conduct a complete assessment of your roof after a strong windstorm occurs, as damage caused by such storms are usually not always apparent.
Damage by Hail
Come spring and fall, hail tends to be the most common reason behind roof damage. Hailstorms can create holes and dings in your roof, especially in asphalt shingles. These can give rise to more serious problems immediately. However, hail is also capable of causing less obvious damage that may go undiscovered until it becomes severe enough to give rise to more damage.
Damage by Rain
Damage caused by rainstorms is the most common and obvious type of storm damage that can happen to your roof. The integrity of your roof is challenged when the internal layers of your roof get exposed to moisture. This gives way to a host of other problems such as decay, mold, leaks, and structural damage, all of which are indicators of damage caused by rain. Such problems may mean that you need to replace your roof soon.
It is imperative that you inspect your roof for damages after a storm has occurred. However, it can sometimes be hard to spot signs of damage because they are not always obvious. Professional roofing experts can help you spot these signs of damage and fix them promptly. In fact, the National Roofing Contractors Association recommends that homeowners enlist the services of professional roofing experts at least twice a year to inspect their roof. It is hence imperative that you act on it as fast as you can after a storm occurs. At SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City, our storm damage specialists understand how to look out for damage on your roof and can help you fix issues before it is too late. Contact our team of professionals, who can advise you on how best to protect your roof and your home from future storms.
What Are Crime Scene Cleaners Trained to Do?

What Are Crime Scene Cleaners Trained to Do?
Oftentimes, accident and crime scenes have biohazard and blood contaminants that pose a serious health risk. For this reason, it is necessary to ensure that the affected area is kept clean and restored to a safe and clean state. Crime scene cleanup involves so much more than just cleaning body tissues and fluids that are left behind after a violent assault or homicide. As a matter of fact, there have been many terms used to describe this industry. One such term is “biohazard remediation”- a term used to show that crime scene cleanup involves cleaning a wide range of contamination issues. Discussed below are some of the many projects that fall under the job scope of crime scene cleaners.
Biohazard Cars
When a car is referred to as a biohazard, it may mean residues of blood and other body fluids have been found inside. Such residues reduce the car’s resale value since nobody wants to buy a pathogen-carrying car and put themselves at risk. Regardless of the amount of air freshener you use, the bottom line is you will need professional biohazard cleaners to help with thorough cleaning and deodorization.
Industrial Accidents
Workplace deaths and injuries can happen anytime and to anyone. Such traumatic events can damage the mental state of coworkers and additionally, most employees lack the knowhow on how to manage such complex cleanup procedures. Various residues and blood spills can spray into inventory containers, ventilation systems and machinery parts. Due to this, ensure you look for certified cleanup and restoration technicians that are compliant with OSHA regarding the cleanup of biohazard worksites.
Mold Cleanup
Any property with a water source can rapidly become infested with mold and pose a great health risk to the occupants. Mold produces irritants and allergens that can cause serious respiratory problems if left unattended. If you suspect your home or property is infested with mold, act immediately and contact certified mold remediation specialists to get your property restored thoroughly and quickly.
Unattended Death
An unattended death refers to an occurrence where a person unexpectedly passes on outside a doctor’s supervision. This could be due to homicide, an accident, suicide, or natural causes. When this happens and the body is not discovered for a long time, it starts decomposing releasing unpleasant tissue and fluids that need to be cleaned up. In this case, cleaning might require removal of drywall, subflooring, or carpet to reach leaks embedded within the structure. SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City technicians will properly and thoroughly sanitize your property to prevent pest and mold infestations.

You Shouldn't Go DIY When It Comes to Property Damage Restoration!

You Shouldn't Go DIY When It Comes to Property Damage Restoration!
If you’re thinking about repairing your own roof, walls or flooring after a natural disaster or even a mild calamity like a burst pipe, you might want to think twice. While it may seem easy to replace a kitchen tap, any serious property damage restoration is something that should be handled by a professional. But why pay when it’s cheaper to DIY, you ask? That’s because a professional has abundant experience in fixing homes, and would be able to figure out what really needs to be done. Even if you think you may know how to fix a leaky pipe for example, there may be other underlying issues that you may not be aware of, and for that it is always better to hire a professional so you prevent worse disasters from happening down the line. Here are some of the major types of damage that you should definitely call a professional for help with.
Damage by Smoke and Fire
Smoke or fire damage may seem simple to clean up on the surface - just use a sponge and some household cleaner to get rid of that soot. However, there is more damage and danger that lies beneath the surface. If your home has sustained a fire, there are ultra-fine smoke and soot particles which would have by now settled into the small cracks and crevices of your home, leaving a burnt smell to linger in your home for a very long time. What’s worse, anyone in your home with respiratory problems like asthma would have their breathing issues aggravated by the smoke entering their lungs with every breath, and smoke may even cause your eyes to water due to irritation, even after the place has been supposedly cleaned up.
Damage by Flooding
The damage caused by flooding can often be quite extensive. Not only does flooding saturate and damage nearly everything it reaches, it also seeps into the walls and can cause secondary damage such as mold. Furthermore, the danger of flooding comes quite frequently - especially if your area experiences heavy rains. Once your home has been flooded, simply mopping and drying the floors and walls is certainly not enough; it is essential to check behind the walls and up on the rooftops to see where water has soaked through the walls, and where mold is likely to thrive.
Mold Damage
Mold is capable of growing in dark and damp places within 48 hours or less of a flood or leakage. Known as the silent killer, it is often not obvious until it spreads and covers your entire wall or ceiling. In large quantities, mold can structurally weaken your building, and even cause parts of your building to buckle or collapse. While it may just look like black spots or discoloration on your wall, simply painting over it will not get rid of it. A proper mold removal process needs to be done to eliminate this danger to your home.
Furthermore, mold can cause or aggravate health effects. As mold grows, it releases spores into the air that can be inhaled by occupants of the house, and depending on how bad the mold is, it may be identified by its telltale musty smell. These spores spell bad news especially for infants, the elderly, or anyone with existing health effects. A professional restoration company is needed to check and sanitize the building walls and ceiling to ensure that mold cannot grow and cause more problems in your home.
A professional home restoration service like SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City will take care of your property damage "Like it never even happened." We will also work with your insurance company to cover damage claims. Call us if you need any assistance.
Check These Appliances for Possible Mold Growth
12/30/2020 (Permalink)
Mold growth occurs naturally and is all over the place, especially in locations that have high moisture. Many people are unaware of the fact that mold might even be present in their appliances, so inspecting these machines is a great way to find hidden mold so that can be removed before it becomes problematic.
Washing Machines
If you notice a musty odor when opening your washing machine, this could be a sign that mold is present. Washing machines are manufactured to be water tight, which makes them an ideal environment for mold. Clean your washing machine’s gasket with water and soap, and then run it on a cycle that is empty using baking soda, hot water or bleach. If the musty smell persists, this means the mold has probably entered the filter, drum or drain, which means you’ll need professional assistance.
Air Conditioning Vents
The vent of your air conditioner is another place where mold can develop. It can usually be identified visually by peeking through the vents or smelling them to see if an unpleasant odor is present. If it is, you’ll want to consult with an A/C expert.
Humidifier
A lot of the new humidifiers are advertised to be antimicrobial, but in reality they require regular cleaning as well. Once a day, prior to refilling them, you will want to empty, then rinse and dry, and once per week you can remove scale using vinegar and then apply disinfectant according to the instructions of the manufacturer.
Refrigerator
If you see or smell mold inside your fridge, it can be easily addressed with some fungicide, baking soda and warm water. Remove all of the contents first, and then carefully wipe the walls and insides, which include the hard to reach crevices. Don’t forget to take out the shelves and bins so you can clean under them as well, but be careful with glass, as you don’t want to scratch it. Be sure to check the freezer to.
Do Thermostats Help With Mold?
No, because mold enjoys temperatures similar to those which are preferable to humans. Additionally, it can also thrive in frigid environments. Therefore, attempting to control mold with low temperatures will not be effective.
Getting Rid of Wall Mold
Mold needs moisture to thrive, so the best way to stop it from appearing on walls is to have it professionally cleaned, and then purchase a humidity and temperature sensor so that you can monitor and ensure that your home is always lower than 70 to 75 percent RH. Otherwise, you will need to invest in better dehumidification or ventilation.
Is It Possible For Black Mold To Appear On Plastic?
Black mold, which is also called Stachybotrys chartarum, is not able to thrive on plastic, concrete, ceramic or vinyl surfaces. It prefers materials which are rich in fiber with reduced nitrogen content, like wood, wallboard or pape

Why You Should Engage Commercial Cleaning Services
The state of your office cleanliness bears a direct reflection of your business, and a clean office makes for a conducive environment for your staff to work. However, as a business owner, you may find yourself stretched in different directions to meet multiple business obligations. When this happens, you may start to overlook your office's upkeep, which can be detrimental to your business.
Strike one item off your priority list by entrusting this simple yet essential task of ensuring that your office is well-kept to a commercial cleaning service instead. Listed below are a few other reasons why this would benefit you much in the long run.
Boost Your Team's Morale
When business owners decide to delegate cleaning duties to the office staff, they could be unknowingly affecting the office morale. Most office workers would not want to be the one taking out the trash or cleaning a bathroom.
On top of that, when your office staff is spending time fulfilling their cleaning duty, this could potentially mean that a customer's phone call has been left unanswered or a customer requiring immediate assistance is left waiting. When this happens, it is your business that could be suffering.
Allow your staff to focus on what they do best and leave the cleaning to experts who would quickly and efficiently maintain your office cleanliness.
You Will Never Run Out of Necessities
Business owners often overlook ensuring the toilets are well-stocked with toilet paper and paper towels considering that they would typically have more pressing matters to handle.
It can be quite frustrating for your team and customers alike to find that the toilet is out of toilet paper in a time of need. With a professional cleaning service, you will never have to worry about such situations again.
Regularly Maintained Carpets
Ensuring that your carpets are well-maintained can help to improve the overall image of your office. If left uncared for, dirty carpets could become a trip hazard, spread illness, or affect the air quality in your office.
Improved Air Quality and Sanitization
There is more to it than meets the eye when it comes to maintaining a clean office. Dust often builds up in offices in places we may not look at when cleaning on our own; however, this could cause the office to become a respiratory hazard in the long run.
Thorough dusting and sanitization will help minimize the allergens in your office, improve air quality. Should they fall sick, this could directly affect your production or business output.
Conclusion
Leaving your office cleanliness in the hands of a professional company may seem like an unnecessary expense now, however maintaining a clean and healthy environment for everyone to work in will benefit you greatly over time.

Identifying Frozen Pipes During The Upcoming Winter Season

Identifying Frozen Pipes During The Upcoming Winter Season
During winter, homeowners are faced with many possible home problems that require repair. When the temperature starts to drop below zero degrees, a common problem homeowners encounter is a frozen water pipe. A frozen water pipe is dangerous and can be very costly to repair. When water freezes, it expands; this results in increased pressure in the lines, to the point where these pipes cannot hold the water anymore. If you can spot a frozen water pipe early, it can save you the trouble of a burst water pipe. For instance, if you turn on the faucet and only get a small trickle of water, you may have a frozen water pipe. If you are unsure about maintaining your pipes, you should engage professionals to help you prevent them from bursting.
Problems that Arise from a Frozen Pipe
If you miss the initial warning signs, the problem can get worse and bring about several complications. These include:
Increased possibility of bursting: A frozen pipe can burst at any time and bring about a host of problems. If a water pipe bursts outdoors as you will need to deal with damaged water in harsh weather and a slippery condition.
Lack of running water: It is incredibly inconvenient without a proper supply of running water. It makes simple daily tasks like showering and washing the dishes difficult, and can interfere with the activities you do on a daily basis.
Identifying Frozen Pipes
There are many water pipes in a house, both outside and inside. Every bathroom, shower, and sink has its own pipes. The good news is that you are able to identify frozen pipes before they burst from these warning signs.
Strange sells that come from the faucet: if your faucet gives off a weird smell, it may be a sign of a frozen pipe. If the pipe is blocked from ice, the only way to release the order is through the drain or faucet.
Visible frost on the pipe: If your pipes are exposed, you may be able to see frost on the surface of the pipe. If there is the presence of frost, it is likely your pipe is frozen.
Temperature is extremely low: Pipes will not freeze if it is not cold enough. However, once the temperature of your environment drops below the freezing point, you should start to take precautionary measures in order to prevent your pipes from becoming frozen.

Preventing Mold Growth in Commercial Buildings
10/2/2020 (Permalink)
Having mold in your commercial premises can be devastating. It will not only change what customers think about your business but will also adversely affect the productivity of your staff. It is integral to develop ways to inhibit mold growth in commercial buildings. Below are some strategies you should incorporate in your mold prevention plan:
Install Dehumidifiers
One of the main reasons why mold is growing at an alarming rate in your commercial building is because of the high humidity in your location. Dump air is the main culprit that aids mold growth. To drastically reduce moisture and prevent the growth of these deadly elements, consider installing dehumidifiers in different parts of your commercial property. Also, install small dehumidifiers in places such as attics and basements to keep everything dry.
Be On the Lookout
Mold is sneaky and often grows in areas you may never imagine. To prevent mold-related problems, develop a routine inspection plan which seeks to identify high moisture areas, fuzzy or spotty stains on walls, damp surfaces, and other areas where mold might grow. Ask your janitorial staff or mold remediation contractor to notify you as soon as these areas are identified so that you can determine the next course of action.
Repair Damages As Soon As You Notice Them
Leaky roofs, unsealed door frames and windows, and cracked foundations are all problems that could aid mold growth. Therefore, do regular inspections to your commercial property and carry out repairs as soon as possible. Also, check your plumbing system constantly and call in a plumber to detect unseen leaks and fix them. If you ignore water damage, you will soon face a moldy disaster that could kill your business operations.
Clean Your HVAC System and Ducts
The ventilation, ducts, and HVAC system enhance the comfort of your commercial building, but if they aren’t cleaned properly, they could help in spreading mold spores. To prevent this, ensure these elements are cleaned to the core and are constantly maintained. For the best outcomes, schedule a regular maintenance program with the best local HVAC contractor you can find.
Work With a Professional
One of the best ways to prevent mold growth in your commercial premise is to work with a mold remediation expert. This professional has the knowledge, experience, and tools required to custom-tailor solutions that fit your structure. Working with a specialist ensures all existing problems are fixed, and your commercial building will stay clear of mold-related damage for a long time.
How to Remove Graffiti From Different Surfaces
10/2/2020 (Permalink)
In case you have been a victim of paint vandalism in your home or commercial property, you are probably confused and wondering what to do next. You are looking for ways to remove graffiti from different surfaces, and this is why you are here! One of the most important things you should remember is to remove graffiti within 24-48 hours after discovering it. Doing this will not only ensure you get rid of the problem before it becomes a crisis, but it will also send a message to paint vandals that you will not tolerate their undesirable actions on your walls and other surfaces.
Removing graffiti is not as difficult as you might think. Below are some practical ways you can remove spray paint from different surfaces:
Removing Graffiti from Wood
Wooden fences and other surfaces are common areas you will find disturbing graffiti and tagging. In case your wooden surface us new and well-treated, you can remove graffiti by wiping it with acetone or white spirit. This will thin the spray paint and eliminate it in no time. In case your surfaces are old and have started showing signs of weathering, avoid using spirits because they will help the wood to absorb spray paints even further. Instead, use a jet spray washer. This machine will apply pressure for the exterior of the graffiti and remove the paint. If this doesn’t work, the only option is to apply a dark wood stain or paint the surface to hide the view.
Removing Graffiti from Metal
To remove graffiti from metal surfaces, such as doors, use spirit-based thinners such as acetone, WD40 spray, white spirits, or lacquer thinner. When you apply any of these, rub the surface rigorously, and the paint should start thinning and lifting. If this doesn’t work properly, consider using something more abrasive such as light sandpaper. In case you are facing the worst graffiti, and you can’t get it off with spirits and abrasive materials, consider using a pressure washer.
Removing Graffiti from Plastic Surfaces
Since plastics don’t bond well with spray paints, removing graffiti from such surfaces is not difficult. However, avoid using strong spirit-based chemicals and paint thinners since they might react with the plastics and cause an irreparable finish. Use nail polish remover or light acetone to remove spray paints from plastic surfaces, and if this doesn’t work, rub them with a ball of fine wire wool. Don’t use any type of sandpaper because it will scratch the surfaces and leave them dull and unsightly.
Removing Graffiti from Masonry, Brickwork, and Concrete
Removing graffiti from concrete, brickwork, and masonry is not easy. You need to use methods that ensure you don’t damage the motor and create new problems that need pricy repair. In case your surfaces are not painted, don’t use paint thinners and chemicals because they will only spread the graffiti paint further. A pressure jet washer at around 3,0000psi should do the job right. Acetone and some baking soda-based products could help restore these surfaces, but avoid applying them with too much pressure.
In case you have tried all the methods above to remove graffiti from different surfaces without success, consider painting over the surface to cover the graffiti. If this doesn’t bring out the desired look, hire a graffiti removal firm with highly trained restoration technicians for tailored solutions.
Understanding Unsanitary Conditions
4/21/2020 (Permalink)
How often do you use the term “unsanitary” in your everyday exchanges? Maybe you use it in reference to a pile of dirty laundry or ice cream stain on your couch. However, when do you draw the line when distinguishing a dirty condition from an unsafe one? Furthermore, how possible it for homeowners to prevent their spaces from being totally uninhabitable?
What is an Unsanitary Living Condition?
Different states and counties consider various factors before terming a place as an unsanitary living condition. Most, if not all of them, agree on the following features when rendering a place “unsanitary”:
- Plenty of filth and dirt around the home
- Waste buildup (both human and animal)
- Faulty stoves, furnaces, and other appliances
- Infestations in the form of vermin and/or insects
- Non-functional electricity, gas, water or other utilities
- Amateur construction or poor standards of cleanliness around the living quarters
Once any or all of these conditions are noticed in any property, it is automatically deemed unsafe for habitation. However, there is not an exclusive distinction between the two terms “uninhabitable” and “unsanitary”. Uninhabitable spaces feature one or two of the above, while unsanitary places feature several of them.
What Leads to Unsanitary Homes?
In some cases, either the renter or property owner is to blame for the unsafe nature of a residence. Hoarding is a common disorder among US residents that often leads to unsafe living conditions. Hoarding involves collecting clutter and keeping them long past their average period of use. Paper items such as magazines and newspapers are among the most common goods to be hoarded. Once these items take over the home, that place easily becomes an unsafe spot – unless a reliable cleaning service is contacted.
How Does Hoarding Come About?
Although the root cause is yet to be fully understood, hoarding is often attributed to critical mental disability or illness. Professionals often distinguish a pack rat from a hoarder by determining whether their disorders are either compulsions or personal preferences.
Is it Possible to Report Unsanitary Living Conditions?
If you suspect that someone close to you is living in unsafe or unsanitary conditions, you are advised to report it. This will not only benefit them in the long run but also keep your physical and mental health in check. It is relatively easy for pest and rodent infestations to spread. This is a common case especially for houses and apartment buildings located within close proximity of each other. If you have the landowner’s contacts, inform them first before anyone else.
If the landlord does not contact a cleaning service, your local health department is always a phone call away. However, prior to filing a complaint, be one hundred percent clear on your local tenant laws. Ensure you meet the minimum requirements before contacting higher authorities. How long your landowner has to take action strongly depends on the local or state laws. If your loved one has a hoarding issue, consider contacting your local mental health professional.

What You Need to Know About Trauma Cleanup
3/12/2020 (Permalink)
Trauma is never an easy thing to deal with. When you have to manage trauma cleanup in the aftermath of a traumatic event, you may be overwhelmed and you may not be thinking straight. Most people do not know where to start with the cleaning. Sometimes, they just want to clean up the place as fast as possible and they forget to consider safety.
Trauma cleanup is highly unpleasant and messy. However, it can also be very dangerous. The actual cleaning process can pose a threat to safety, depending on the situation. If the cleaning is not done well, it can also present a future health risk.
Your best choice would be to hire a professional to handle the trauma cleanup on your behalf. They are specially trained for these exact situations and will be able to get the job done safely and thoroughly.
Situations that Require Trauma Cleanup
You may be unsure of what qualifies as trauma or when the right time would be to hire a professional cleanup service. Below are some situations where it is highly advisable to call on a trauma cleanup service.
- Tear gas cleanup
- Blood spillage
- Industrial accidents
- Homicide
- Suicide
- Unattended deaths
- Infectious disease contamination
Trauma cleanup is a difficult thing to do. It can be both emotionally and physically draining. It can also be dangerous for your health. Fortunately, you can turn to trained professionals to help you get the place of the traumatic event, be it your home or elsewhere, thoroughly disinfected and void of health hazards.
Why you Need to Engage a Professional
In certain trauma events, the aftermath can result in numerous health hazards in the site of the incident. This is especially dangerous when the incident happened in your home as it can pose a threat to you and your family members.
If there are body fluids or other kinds of the biological waste present, they need to be properly handled. They have to be disposed of in a biohazard waste facility that is specially equipped to deal with the hazardous material. The affected area also needs to be properly cleaned to ensure that it will not pose a future health risk.
Professional cleanup technicians can do exactly that. They are well qualified to deal with any kind of trauma and will abide by government regulations when removing hazardous waste to guarantee everyone’s safety.

Why Utilize Restoration Services After a Disaster?
3/12/2020 (Permalink)
Disasters, whether manmade or natural, are one of the worst things a person can experience. Even if one survives, they may have to contend with power outages, water shortages, and the unavailability of basic services. Additionally, the property that you invested time, energy and money into could be eviscerated. Below are some ways in which restoration services can help you overcome and rebuild.
What Type of Property Damage Is Most Severe?
While property can be damaged in many ways, the most severe involves water. The reason is because water damage is not an event which is singular. Rather, it is often the culmination of multiple issues involving gutters, shingles, flooding, downspouts, fire or wind. Damage involving water is very difficult, time consuming and costly to repair as it is typically accompanied by mold which causes additional problems.
How The Restoration Process Works
A contractor that specializes in restoration will begin with the factors that make the property unlivable, the most important of which are structural problems. If flooding has occurred, it is essential to ensure no mold is present within the flooring or walls, and each stud and support will have to be treated using special microbial agents. Fixing drywall which is crumbling due to smoke or water damage will also be needed, along with electrical and plumbing services. If left unresolved, the damage can irrevocably lower your property’s value.
Why Restoration Is The Fastest Way To Increase Property Value After A Disaster
There are a number of reasons why restoration is the best and quickest way to regain your property value post disaster. It allows you to remove moderately tiered fixtures such as carpets or laminated counters so that fresh, upgraded materials can be added such as hardwood or granite flooring. Furthermore, spaces which were unused and unfinished previously, such as attics or basements, can be finished to your exact specifications. A new climate control or A/C system can also be installed, along with repairing the roof.
While it may seem like restoring your property after a disaster will be a process full of stress, it won’t be if you choose the right contractor. An experienced professional will be able to assess the extent of the damage, and determine the best way to correct it in a manner which is most cost effective. However, the best contractors will not only restore your property, they will make it superior to the one you had previously.
They will work closely with you to repair damage involving fire and water. If you decide to keep your existing carpets, they provide specialized services that will get it fixed. One of the most common services requested by clients who have had their properties damaged is complete service restoration. This involves multiple tasks, including the elimination of odor, mold removal, and boarding up areas until they can be addressed. The best providers offer service which is affordable yet unobtrusive.
How Often Should You Clean Residential Air Ducts?
3/12/2020 (Permalink)
Even when you deactivate your cooling and heating system periodically, the air ducts will still collect allergens, dander and dust, along with mold spores that could compromise the safety of the home and everyone that resides in it. Below is a description of how frequently the ducts should be cleaned, and the best way to do it.
Factors That Determine When Ducts Should Be Cleaned
Most experts recommend having your residential ducts professionally cleaned every two or three years. However, there are circumstances which may increase or decrease the frequency. Examples include residing with someone who is at greater risk of becoming sick due to any particles or allergens that may be emitted from air conditioners or furnaces, such as toddlers, infants, seniors, or anyone who is known to suffer from asthma.
If you have pets, this means extra fur and dander will be present in the building and ducts. In this case the ductwork should be cleaned more frequently than two years, since otherwise the dander/fur might leave a permanent pet smell that will adversely affect those who are allergic. If you live near a dirt road, especially one which receives frequent traffic, the dust and soot from vehicle tailpipes could gradually enter the building over time.
Buildings that have elevated moisture levels, and which require dehumidifiers are also at a higher risk of growing mold spores within the ductwork. Mold that spreads throughout the building can become especially hazardous since everyone living there will be breathe it in, along with visitors.
How Ductwork Cleaning Works
Ductwork can be cleaned in multiple ways and each contractor has their own preferred method. A good team will be transparent regarding the process they use and will explain to you what will be done and why. They will start by inspecting your ducts to determine how dirty they are and whether or not special tools will be needed. They will also check for mold as well as asbestos.
They will put covers on your carpets and furnishings before starting the cleaning to make sure they aren’t exposed. The ducts will then be vacuumed, and the interior will be brushed to ensure all the debris and dust is dislodged. If nesting birds or other pests are found, they will be removed. If duct insulation is discovered which is too damp, they will recommend replacing it, to stop the development of mold. All of the ductwork will then be insulated and sealed as needed.
Although ductwork isn’t technically an HVAC system component, it serves a very important purpose. It is responsible for the filtration and distribution of air around your home. It is easy to ignore, which many residents do, until they have a problem. The best way to prepare the ducts for cleaning is to ensure there is always clear and unobstructed space near the HVAC and registers. This will make it easier for technicians to insert the extended flexible brushes that are used for cleaning.
Containing The Damage

We take mold jobs very seriously here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City. Pictured here is one of our job site’s that was facing a growth. We contained the mold to one room. The sheet prevents the and continuous spreading. Once the area is contained we then use antimicrobial sprays to stop the mold in its tracks. Unfortunately mold does not hold back. It spread to numerous boxes and bins that were not able to be saved. Fortunately, for the client we were able to salvage a good amount of items that were unaffected. We sprayed these items as well as they were exposed to the mold spores. Once the items were cleaned we separated them from the containment to prevent further contamination. The client was very happy with our work post labor.

Local Jersey City Resident Experiences Water Damage After Fire
3/20/2019 (Permalink)
Pictured here is the wall post drying.
When a Jersey City local called our office for services we told them we’d be on site to resolve the issues that had surfaced. A fire started in the back room of one apartment unit. The fire caused the sprinkler system to activate. The fire was eventually contained and luckily did not cause too much damage. However, the sprinkler system is the root of the problem. It caused water to leak down and effect two additional units. We went into each unit found the location of water and removed the corresponding walls and ceilings. Once the walls were removed we set up equipment to dry the areas. Water damage jobs are our most frequent call ins. Unfortunately, no one can predict when a fire will take place. SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City understands the frustration that comes with fire damage and water damage to your home or property; rest assured we deal with these jobs daily and will help you resolve all issues.
